A tutor is supposed to create a positive environment for a student to grow and mold a student for future successful endeavours and most importantly motivate the student to achieve excellent results. I think I'm really confident in the subjects I want to teach particularly Mathematics and Physics. I believe I would be able to help students solve…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. Additionally, the tutor needs to maintain…

I believe the most significant aspect of a tutor is integrity and maintaining a level of respect to my students. In supporting my students, besides academic help, mental supports are also critically vital, hence it is crucial for me to ensure my students are well-balanced of both academic and social aspects. Regarding teaching, I believe I can…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to build their confidence and independence in learning. Beyond just solving problems or improving grades, my goal is to help students truly believe in their own abilities. Many students struggle not because they lack potential, but because they doubt themselves. I work to change that. By…

The important things a tutor can do for their students include making the subject enjoyable and empowering students to reach a point from where they can arrive at solutions on their own. The first and foremost task for tutors is to make the subject more enjoyable than what the students perceive it to be. Once the students start enjoying the…

In my opinion the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them reach their goals. Whether that may be to help them catch up in certain subjects, to reach for top marks for their desired high school or university or in need of motivation to study in creating habits. I believe that the most important thing will be for the tutor…

Make them feel comfortable enough to ask any kind of questions and the aim is that they feel confident in problem solving and tackling unfamiliar problems with ease. Moreover, it is important for the tutor to align to the goals of the student and help them achieve that. I can explain difficult problems in an easy to understand manner. I explain…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is to provide individualised instruction, as well as a safe and non-judgemental learning environment to student, something that they may not be able to obtain in a normal big-size class with limited time to teach an increasingly information-heavy curriculum. To begin with, a tutor must encourage a student to do better and learn from previous mistakes. Getting upset/impatient with a student is only going to discourage the student and prevent him/her from reaching potential; and that's the opposite of the desired goal. In addition, confidence has to be built in a student; this way a student will be able…

A tutor can transform a student's life by helping them become more confident in their academic career, which inevitably improves general confidence. Further, a tutor provides mentoring and coaching as experts in their field which a student can carry with them beyond school, ensuring they are set up for success in their chosen field. I believe a…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

For me, I consider giving them the knowledge and confidence to be able to step out of their comfort zone to achieve something previously unachievable the most important thing. The process of getting a tutor was very simple and the services are very flexible. The payment options on line are very simple as well. Our tutor, James is extremely flexible with times and days which has worked really well. Initially we signed up for weekly slots then moving to fortnightly with extra lessons if needed. James has worked wonders with Sarah's progress in Maths and she is doing really well with the support of James who is a gem and have such confidence in. It's being a big success and we are thankful for the services. Kind Regards Iain and Laura Cooper

Inside AbbotsfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Rose focused on multiplying and dividing with the column method, practiced rounding larger numbers up to the millions, and explored classifying angles and triangles using diagrams.

For Year 9, Chloe tackled surface area of prisms and composite shapes, then applied these skills in worded problem contexts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lachlan revised applications of derivatives and looked ahead at stationary points, working through example problems for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often relied on checking answers with the tutor after every maths question, revealing low confidence even when their calculations were correct; as one note said, "she checks with me each question—most of the time the answer is correct."

In a senior Standard Maths session, another student struggled to keep up with new content due to missing earlier work and found it difficult to dedicate time to catching up.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 learner faced exam pressure, rushing through working and making small mistakes that cost marks.

Missed assignments or incomplete homework were also noted in several cases.

Recent Achievements

One Abbotsford tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on memorising rules now confidently explains her steps for solving trigonometry questions, especially with SOHCAHTOA, and can tackle worded problems that stumped her last term.

In Year 7 English, a student who struggled to express ideas has started using the P.E.E. structure when writing about texts and can now justify how she arrived at her answers—something she hesitated to do before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student moved from frequent errors in rounding numbers to consistently rounding up correctly when needed and completed her six times tables worksheet with perfect accuracy by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Abbotsford Public School.
