To really care for them - not just for the money but to really want to see them grow. Sometimes its difficult to read what is going inside a students head and maybe student says he/she understands the subject but in reality they are just shy to ask questions As a tutor I can have some informal tests to see whether the student is understanding. A good tutor should always focus on qualitative approach rather than quantitative…

To be able to connect with the kids/student, making an environment where they are excited and enjoy studying, while being able to speak up on their doubts. I connect with the kids quite well. I'm quite a creative thinker myself, especially when on the methods to get myself to understand and memorise topics. Hence, I can use this to my advantage…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence in learning and foster a genuine interest in the subject. I think a tutor doesn’t just help with academic skills, but they also create a safe and encouraging space where students feel heard, supported, and motivated to improve. By identifying a…

In my opinion, the role of a tutor goes beyond simply imparting knowledge. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. It's about being a guiding light through challenges, a source of motivation, and a trusted resource for…

A quality, which I believe tutors should give their students is confidence. The key to mastering any formula or topic is being confident enough to put oneself forward and try it. After all, we cannot find out their strengths or weaknesses without giving a question a shot. A tutor can improve their student’s confidence through repeated practice,…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. This is important because each students have different and sometimes unique effective method of studying, hence a uniform approach of teaching to all students don't always work. This is…

A good tutor should make sure that his/her student understands the essence and real life importance of the subject he/she is teaching. Nothing is stronger than a photographic memory, explaining things and concepts in a flow diagram or figure form will help students to retain more information. Every student is on a learning path, thats why they…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. To be honest, an excellent tutor needs to be able to assist students in meeting deadlines. Delivering instruction that gives students the tools they need to be more independent in their studies is as vital, though. I would suggest to my pupils working on abilities in time management, critical thinking, and evaluation. I think that one of my skills…

I think I huge part of it is often confidence. I have found most students already understand and are able to do the work however they don’t have the confidence to back themselves. In my approach- I want to guide them by building their confidence and helping them step by step through all weaker areas of their academics. I think I am patient…

I believe that each student should be heard in the classroom and encouraged to contribute to discussions. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is make students enjoy the subject if not they will not be able to grasp the concepts well enough. Ensuring communication is sound and fixing student doubts then and there so they don't persist is how one can nurture enjoyment in a student. Also making sure the class isn't frigid and…

The first and foremost is being patient. Not everyone can learn and understand concepts at the same pace, so patience is very important. Trying different learning styles when the initial learning style doesn't work is another one, because people don't learn the same way. I'm very good at breaking down complex concepts into clear,…

A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

Super easy to get going and my daughter loves working with her tutor.
Tanya Connor, Abbotsford

Inside AbbotsfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel focused on multiplying and dividing fractions as well as mastering times tables from 2 to 10 through targeted worksheets.

For Year 8, Emily worked through solving and simplifying algebraic equations, including factorisation, using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James reviewed quadratic functions by practising graphing techniques and applying the quadratic formula to solve a range of problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, one student often skipped crucial steps when multiplying inequalities by negatives, leading to persistent sign errors—"she needs to practice translating English sentences into equations," a tutor noted.

For a Year 9 student, rushing through algebraic fractions without careful layout caused repeated mistakes and slowed progress.

In Year 10 English, a student struggled with structuring essays logically; missing deadlines and incomplete homework compounded this issue.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, reliance on memorisation without practicing tables (7–9) meant slow recall during timed drills, leaving her frustrated as others finished ahead.

Recent Achievements

One Abbotsford tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to leave assignments unfinished but now self-assigns tasks before assessments and works through them independently.

In English, a Year 12 student has become much more confident at forming positions and backing them up with clear reasoning—she recently articulated how Rear Window both depicts and subverts 1950s gender roles, something she'd hesitated to discuss before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who previously made frequent mistakes in times tables just completed all the tricky ones—including the 13s and 14s—with barely any errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Collingwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sophia Mundi Steiner School.
