A tutor can be a role model for the student. Generally students observe character and skills of a tutor and in most cases they try to imitate them. As a tutor we have to be a responsible individual gradually transferring our personality to aspiring students. After all today's students are tommorrow's mentors. I think my determination and my…

Always being understanding and patient. There are a lot of things that can make a student feel low and not special and as a tutor, we need to play to their strengths instead of the majority. Take mental health issues, disabilities, current family background into consideration and make learning a thing that they can enjoy. My ability to understand…

Rather than provide a mass amount of information, the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is instil a sense of confidence and interest in the subject. Personally the experiences that I have taken with me from systems of education have been how applicable the framework of learning is to other facets of the reasoning process.…

A tutor can always assist a student to help understand all of their basic structural and systematic questions and problems. Also a tutor's guidance should inspire the student to work with dedication. I like to address the doubts of students and solve them immediately. I also frequently ask them if they've got any further questions and I keep…

The most important thing a tutor does for a student is helping them become more confident, so that they have faith in their own abilities and performance. This starts by simplifying the content and explaining it in a way that the student can understand, then building this up so they can face the hardest of questions. It is about equipping them…

I've been told I'm a great teacher as I've…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel comfortable learning the material the school gives them and to develop good study skills. The most important thing a tutor can do is just be present for that student. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is simply be open to answer any questions a student might have. Zacharo, Albert Park

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We couldn't be happier. Both girls are enjoying the tutoring with Jackie, and feel they are learning something new each week.

Kymberley has clicked quite well with Gayan and she seems to be very happy with him.

Annalise has settled and is working well with Sam.  He's a great tutor, very attentive and makes her think!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
