The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them to gain understanding on both important content and on how to properly answer all difficult questions in an exam or test environment, additionally, the most important thing a tutor can do is to help a student understand where this knowledge can be applied later in life or in…

I think creating a supportive learning environment is very important as it will slowly build their confidence and not make them want to give up. Along with my problem-solving skills, my deeper understanding of the subjects is important for my student as well. I have strong communication skills which allow me to engage with students, making their…

Listen to the students and understand what the actual issue is. More often than not it's not the concept itself but how the student is processing the concept, and if you don't see that you'll only be able to help them understand through repetition. My ability to tailor lessons to a students needs and study styles. I enjoy working with both…

By personalising their approach and fostering critical thinking, a tutor empowers students to tackle challenges independently. In addition to professional knowledge and skills, tutors need to be patient when dealing with students. In addition, tutors have to be careful to express their opinions and fully understand the students' ideas when teaching the course. My strengths lie in my adaptability and willingness to actively solve problems. But at the same time, because I…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, build the student’s confidence, and help them develop independent learning skills. From my experience mentoring in High school, I saw how crucial it is to tailor support to each student’s needs, not just focusing on grades but also mindset. A good tutor…

I believe that it's crucial for a tutor to create an open and supportive relationship with their student. A student needs to feel comfortable to ask questions and communicate what they need, and it's the tutor's responsibility to create a space where that is possible. As an older sister (and informal tutor) to a 10-year-old little girl, I've…

Help students understand difficult concepts by breaking them down into simpler parts and explaining them in a way that makes sense. It also provides your child with ideas for solving problems, so that he or she will have a method for solving problems of his or her own when faced with challenging problems in the future. Instil in a student a love of learning; teach them how to learn and how to manage their own education. It is relatively easy to study enough to get good marks in an exam, but having a positive attitude and active approach towards learning leads to much better information retention and better outcomes in the future, when the student is on their…

First and foremost, a tutor must have faith in his/her student. Having faith means having the trust that her students have the capability to excel not just academically but, in character development as well. As a tutor, I am not only an assistant in my student’s academic work. I am also a role model whom my student will look up to. Therefore, I…

I think tutors have to have the appropriate amount of empathy to understand, not only the way they learn, but also their reason for learning. Best thing tutor can do is align his values with his student's. I think this is a way to frustrate and alienate him. I can approach a problem the way student does. This gives me an insight into where they…

In my perspective, providing confidence is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. The majority of people would hire a tutor is because of one's unsatisfactory performance towards the subject. Confidence would increase the understanding process for most of the people. Furthermore, to excel in the subject, the student has to work…

A tutor should always allow a student to figure out problem entirely by themselves. The worst thing to do is to solve everything for the student. A student should feel he/she is a smart logical human being, he/she just need a bit of guidance and assistance, however, no one undermines his/her abilities. I am patient and enthusiastic at the same…

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
