The most crucial role of a tutor is to simplify and engage with the content. Since students are already learning the material in school but struggling to grasp it, it is essential to use a different strategy. By making the content simpler and more engaging, the tutor can help the student to not only understand the material but to also apply it in…

i think the best thing a tutor can do in order to properly teach a student is for the tutor to try and put their level of thinking at the same level as the student in order to communicate effective information that is more likely to be retained by the student. i think my biggest strength is adapting to each students needs and way of learning. i…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is build up his/her confidence on the areas he/she is lagging behind. Working as a tutor for hostel students made me realize my excellent ability to effectively communicate the subject matter in a way that best suits them. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is provide assistance as that is the main objective of being their tutor, mentally, academically and emotionally. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do is to work with a student from a student's perspective. It is exactly the reason why group-studying is so effective as everyone is on the same wavelength. A tutor's job is to be able to "read" into the student's mind and solve-problems by comfortably adjusting and improvising…

To inspire the student and help him develop a strong joy in whatever topic. And then giving them a road map for them to be able to to be successful in their studying. Inside Alfords PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex revised multiplication and division strategies, then practiced identifying and measuring angles.

For Year 8, Mia worked on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages using visual examples, while also revisiting earlier topics for a topic test.

In Year 10, Josh tackled advanced algebraic equations alongside trigonometry problems to prepare for his upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

Across Years 7–12, lesson notes repeatedly showed that revision habits need strengthening—particularly independent review between sessions.

For example, in Year 8 algebra, one student was reminded to "practice by himself to remember for tests," but had not attempted problems outside lessons, so key fraction simplifications were quickly forgotten.

In Year 10 trigonometry, another focused only on familiar SOH CAH TOA questions; "needs to go practice over things himself… and memorising SOH CAH TOA," a tutor noted, as exam-style variations remained unattempted. This led to hesitation when tackling anything beyond the standard drills during mock exams.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alfords Point noticed a big change with Max, a Year 10 student who had struggled with trigonometry and algebra—by the end of their session, he solved every question but also tackled extra problems on his own without prompting.

In another high school session, one student went from missing key exam questions to explaining exactly where mistakes happened and how to fix them, showing new self-awareness about learning.

For a younger primary student, a real shift came when she began answering questions out loud after usually waiting for hints; by the last exercise, she volunteered her answers first.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Menai Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alfords Point Public School.
