The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to listen to them. If you do not have two way communication a lot of details can be lost in translation or misunderstood . I am patient and I adapt to my students learning style in order to have effective communication. I plan material ahead of the lesson to ensure that the time I have…

The most important things a tutor can do are foster understanding, build confidence, and inspire curiosity. By creating a supportive environment, providing clear explanations, and encouraging independent problem-solving, tutors help students overcome challenges and engage deeply with the subject. The most important thing is to communicate on a level that is with the students so they can understand the topics you are teaching, so they still feel connected and engaged in learning. In addition, also having a variety of strategies as one size does not fit all so it is about finding the best fit for each student. My strength is to provide…

Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

A quality, which I believe tutors should give their students is confidence. The key to mastering any formula or topic is being confident enough to put oneself forward and try it. After all, we cannot find out their strengths or weaknesses without giving a question a shot. A tutor can improve their student’s confidence through repeated practice,…

A good tutor should make sure that his/her student understands the essence and real life importance of the subject he/she is teaching. Nothing is stronger than a photographic memory, explaining things and concepts in a flow diagram or figure form will help students to retain more information. Every student is on a learning path, thats why they…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. This is important because each students have different and sometimes unique effective method of studying, hence a uniform approach of teaching to all students don't always work. This is…

To be able to connect with the kids/student, making an environment where they are excited and enjoy studying, while being able to speak up on their doubts. I connect with the kids quite well. In my opinion, the role of a tutor goes beyond simply imparting knowledge. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. It's about being a guiding light through challenges, a source of motivation, and a trusted resource for…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is make students enjoy the subject if not they will not be able to grasp the concepts well enough. Ensuring communication is sound and fixing student doubts then and there so they don't persist is how one can nurture enjoyment in a student. Also making sure the class isn't frigid and…

The first and foremost is being patient. Not everyone can learn and understand concepts at the same pace, so patience is very important. Trying different learning styles when the initial learning style doesn't work is another one, because people don't learn the same way. I'm very good at breaking down complex concepts into clear,…

Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
