A tutor should give them the tools and the confidence to tackle any problem in the subject area. This means that the student should gain the skills to solve any problem in the subject area. To enable this level of learning, the tutor must be knowledgeable in the subject and well-prepared for each lesson. I have previous experience working as a…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is create a safe space where mistakes are normal and learning feels comfortable. When students feel supported rather than judged, they’re more willing to ask questions and genuinely learn. I believe my strengths are strong communication, the ability to simplify difficult concepts, and preparing…

Be there for the student as their base. Confidence is key in a student's learning and just being a reliable and safe zone for the student gives them the first push needed to get going. I am very good at breaking each problem down to very simple steps that seem very achievable for the student and I am very good at building confidence in the student…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build trust and create a safe space where students feel confident to ask, share, and explore. Once that trust is there, it becomes much easier to guide them, inspire curiosity, and help them believe in themselves. I want the students to be confident and build their self-esteem. Giving the student the tools and forming the basis to improve themselves is crucial. I think forming the student's understanding for answering any sort of question whether it be in English or Maths is necessary for achieving marks that most students cannot gain. While for maths a lot of the questions are based around simply using a formula,…

The most important thing a tutor can do is never give up on a student. A tutor needs to be patient with his pupils since every student cannot grasp a particular concept at the same rate , therefore patience and understanding the student is more important. A tutor should also give time for students to practice as math is all about logic and…

A good tutor plays a vital role in a student's learning journey by fostering both understanding and confidence. Beyond simply delivering content, an effective tutor identifies the student's strengths and weaknesses, adapts their teaching approach accordingly, and ensures that concepts are truly understood rather than memorized. They encourage…

In my opinion, the first thing a tutor can do to help a student is to first listen to them and take their concerns very seriously. It may be a very simple doubt, but the moment they accept that we are ready to listen to their concerns, we automatically grab their attention and build up a rapport with them. Another critical aspect of tutoring is to…

Students might not know the reason behind their difficulties in learning something, or they may not notice that they have misconceptions that block further learning, so they need tutors to help them out. In my opinion that would be helping a student discover their own motivation and confidence. By showing them what they’re truly capable of and helping them build on that, we can foster a sense of ownership over their learning and long-term growth. Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
