In school, the subject teacher need to face a relatively large group of students, so their teaching style and pace of lesson are more inclined to fit the majority but not everyone. Therefore when it comes to private tuition, the tutor conducting one-to-one lesson can focus on the student himself and personalize the lesson in a way that this…

-> Give many examples and illustrations apart from the theory part. -> Relate the subject with practical scenarios which makes the student keep a memory of the subject. -> Tutor must be patient, and polite enough to handle the basic queries of students. In my view, the most important things a tutor can do is listen patiently to the student, guide them in the right direction, build trust, encourage, and support to drive to excellence. I would consider my strength to be that firstly, I establish a rapport with the children which makes them feel comfortable and in a friendly environment. Then I try…

Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. If the tutor doesn’t listen to a student or understand their struggles with certain areas, how could the tutor expect good results from their student? I believe I am very clear and concise with what I teach, and that because of my openly…

To attentively listen to the student (their stories, worries, and struggles), to identify areas that the student need more work on, trying different learning approaches, to be able to break down large problems into smaller easily managed tasks, and to share our life and study skills with them where relevant. The most important thing for a tutor is to never underestimate a student, and to be there for them as a support and to show them that they can. If a student loses self esteem and think that they can't do it...they wont. It's all about giving them a healthy mindset which allows them to gain the knowledge given. My biggest strength i believe is how…

The most valuable asset I have as a tutor is my belief that every student can succeed. Each student should come in knowing that there is someone who believes they can achieve more if they have the right motivation. Teachers have a large impact on shaping students mindset, and wellbeing, which I take to heart for all my students. As a pre-service…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. I believe that tutoring sessions should be based on the student's needs in a specific subject area, and the only way to understand these needs is to have an honest, open conversation with them. I think its understanding, confidence in knowledge and patience. We as tutors have to realise that not all students will understand ever single concept that they are taught the first time they are taught it. Therefore being understanding of everyone's situations, capabilities and then being able to find a unique way of teaching a student that…

I think a tutor is a map for the pathway of the student's success. The tutor will do all within their limit to make sure they have given enough importance to the student to excel. This includes the peripheral knowledge that a student should have surrounding the content/topic - which means what is the purpose of learning/ how is it going to help…

Tutor should guide the student to think independently and creatively. This enables the student to form their own ideas and understand a concept in from different point of views instead of just following steps and rules. These skills are crucial for a student especially in the latter part of their school life. When I teach, I will put myself in the…

I think the most important thing for a tutor to do is to provide an engaging lessons whilst also being patient and giving the students time to properly understand and practice each concept. Instead of just focusing on one method that only appeals to a single learning style, varying teaching techniques can cater your lessons to different learning styles. Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
