Based on my experience, I would love to help my students to find out the most appropriate study method for them. As I was in secondary school, science subjects were not my preferable subjects at all. I learnt it by heart and completely did not understand the theories behind at all. My method was not appropriate as it is more suitable for…

I consider the most important things a tutor can do is not just to help the student understand the subject and hand, but also to inspire and motivate the student so they become more passionate about learning and strive to put in their best effort. Learning is so much more than memorising the syllabus and I believe it is important to help student…

Beyond simply delivering content, an effective tutor identifies the student's strengths and weaknesses, adapts their teaching approach accordingly, and ensures that concepts are truly understood rather than memorized. They encourage…

I have a positive attitude even when the student is wrong, I correct them by not saying that they were wrong but by picking up the same topic and explaining it in the correct manner. Instead of spoon-feeding all the information, I expect students to brainstorm ideas. I motivate the student to think in various aspects which would help them broaden…

Provide a love for learning. To allow the student the chance to critically think about the problem, and give help and hints when needed. I believe it is important for students to learn the ability to think for themselves first rather than relying on the tutor to just give them answers. It is more important to teach students the process of learning and figuruing out problems…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be to help them understand the concpet in their own way, I would make sure the student finds the path by themselves. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is that they have the drive and the patience for them until they learn. The whole point of why we tutor kids is for them to learn and apply what they know. You also need to love the student and take care of them as a mother does to their kids. My strengths as a tutor are: - I have patience…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel supported and confident. Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
