The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, foster independent thinking, and make the subject approachable. These can be done by providing clear explanations and creating a supportive environment. Giving the student the tools and forming the basis to improve themselves is crucial. I think forming the student's understanding for answering any sort of question whether it be in English or Maths is necessary for achieving marks that most students cannot gain. While for maths a lot of the questions are based around simply using a formula,…

I think the most important thing is to guide them to find their own methods to solve problems and help them build up strategies. As a result, they can recognise different modules and use appropriate methods. I am approachable and I can guide students to the answers instead of providing them answers directly. I love helping others with their…

Everyone can learn and reach his best. By being a tutor, I can help a student to grow by creating learning methods suit to his condition and develop the student's competencies. In learning Math, many hope to get high abilities in solving problems. That is very important, but I believe that I need to strengthen the conceptual understanding before…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be to help them understand the concpet in their own way, I would make sure the student finds the path by themselves. My job would be to make sure they go in the right direction and of course, if the path the student took is incorrect, I would take a few steps back and explain the main…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is that they have the drive and the patience for them until they learn. The whole point of why we tutor kids is for them to learn and apply what they know. You also need to love the student and take care of them as a mother does to their kids. My strengths as a tutor are: - I have patience…

A good tutor plays a vital role in a student's learning journey by fostering both understanding and confidence. Beyond simply delivering content, an effective tutor identifies the student's strengths and weaknesses, adapts their teaching approach accordingly, and ensures that concepts are truly understood rather than memorized. They encourage…

I strongly believe that tutor should never give up on any students and respect student's own learning style. With my international…

Help them to do the best they can, and to enjoy doing it. I believe that they go together, that "learning" which is not enjoyed is often, in the long run, not real learning at all, just hoop jumping. Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
