To allow the student to learn by guiding them there. This way, I believe students are able to improve even after you’ve stopped tutoring them. In short, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be for tutors to ensure that students are confident in how they approach a problem. My strengths as a tutor, I would say,…

A tutor shouldn't be the individual who would only be associated with studies and stuff. A tutor should be someone to whom a student can approach with any sorts of problem with the expectation that their tutor can find a solution to it. Moreover, a tutor should be a guiding light to the student. - Communication - Experience -…

I have a positive attitude even when the student is wrong, I correct them by not saying that they were wrong but by picking up the same topic and explaining it in the correct manner. Instead of spoon-feeding all the information, I expect students to brainstorm ideas. I motivate the student to think in various aspects which would help them broaden…

Based on my experience, I would love to help my students to find out the most appropriate study method for them. As I was in secondary school, science subjects were not my preferable subjects at all. I learnt it by heart and completely did not understand the theories behind at all. My method was not appropriate as it is more suitable for…

Be honest. This helps to establish rapport and trust, the two most critical elements to a successful tutoring relationship. Be flexible. This means being willing to adjust techniques and approaches to meet the learning styles of the student. Be patient. What is obvious or easy for you may not be so for your student. Learn not to show annoyance…

A tutor can be a role model for the student. Generally students observe character and skills of a tutor and in most cases they try to imitate them. As a tutor we have to be a responsible individual gradually transferring our personality to aspiring students. After all today's students are tommorrow's mentors. I think my determination and my…

It is fundamental that tutors make sure their students understand the content they are teaching. Another important thing a tutor can do is to teach students how to study for a particular subjects. Learning strategies varies from subjects to subjects, if the student is struggling with a particular subject in most cases it is their learning…

A tutor can show the beauty of the subject and make the student love the subject. Once that happens, the student can excel not only in that subject, but can also approach everything in life with confidence and aptitude. I love teaching - That would be my greatest strength. I believe that a tutor should plan individually for each student to cater for their needs. Each student has their own strengths and weaknesses, and it should be the tutor's role to discover these and change their teaching approaches accordingly. A good tutor should be able to encourage the students to overcome setbacks and achieve their best…

The ability to understand a student and their learning style is something I highly value in a tutor. In school classes where they are often one of many, they may find that the teaching style may not work for them and that they cannot achieve their goals. In a tutoring scenario, we are able to cater to them more specifically, to be intuitive about…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is truly be their well-wisher. I think students are coming to tutors because they know they need help. Acknowledging that they took that step, understanding the knowledge base with which they're there, teaching them in easy terms, and creating a long term plan for their studies is the…

Patience and kindness. At the end of the day, I think what matters the most is not how many percentages the student's grades have risen, but more about how "healthy" the relationship between the tutor and the student is so that they can always ask for help when needed I am a persistent person and I don't give up easily. I believe my greatest…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, make learning less stressful, and explain things in a way that actually makes sense to them. It’s also important to be patient, encouraging, and flexible, every student learns differently, so a tutor should be able to adapt to their needs and help them feel…

To be consoling and confident, so that the student believes in you. A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

Inside ArmadaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 Dishita focused on interpreting time-series data, including mean-smoothing and deseasonalisation techniques, and practiced applying the 68-95-99.7 rule for normal distributions using exam questions.

Year 11 Emily worked through scatterplots and transformations in statistics, consolidating skills by tackling residuals and regression problems from recent school assessments.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Josh revised financial mathematics concepts such as compound interest calculations and explored surface area and volume of composite shapes through targeted textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3–4, one student often attempted times tables and complex multiplication mentally rather than writing out working, which led to confusion and missed steps—she sometimes forgets to add zeros when moving to the next line.

Notably, in VCE Maths (Year 12), a different student relied on reading exam questions quickly without highlighting key information or taking structured notes. As noted: Needs to read the question carefully. Use a sheet of paper to track reading.

In both cases, skipping systematic written processes made it harder to spot errors and slowed progress during challenging tasks or under exam conditions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Armadale recently saw Dishita, a Year 12 student, begin using the 'talk-aloud' strategy to break down complex standardised score questions—something she previously found daunting. She's now highlighting key details in exam problems and independently choosing the right formulas.

Meanwhile, Rose (Year 6) has moved from needing step-by-step support with long division to confidently solving multi-digit problems and tackling time conversion questions with little prompting.

For a younger learner, Jacob is no longer relying solely on his number line for single-digit addition; he now attempts mental calculations first and checks his work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malvern Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The King David School - The Rebecca Magid Centre.
