I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to foster confidence, promote understanding, and encourage independence. It's not just about providing answers—it's about equipping students with the tools and mindset to think critically, problem-solve, and take ownership of their learning. A good tutor helps students identify their…

I believe that as much as it is important to help the child improve and gain confidence, it is also important to build and maintain a tutor-student relationship. This enables students who don't tend to be open in class and speak up when they have questions to openly do so during tutoring sessions. This is something I have been able to achieve with…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide support, encouragement and a positive learning environment. I find that tutoring is most effective, when the pupil willing to learn, and the best way to do that is by making maths engaging rather than frustrating. My strengths as a tutor would be my patience and my creativeness. I…

I think that providing a safe and encouraging space for a student is the most important thing for a tutor to do, as well as ignite some passion in them to succeed and be a support system. I believe that I am very approachable and friendly, so that students would be comfortable with asking for help. I also feel as though I can share some of my…

To just listen. As counterintuitive as it sounds, listening is more important than teaching. As a tutor one must fully grasp what the student wants and needs and how they best learn. To be able to pick up on non verbal cues if the student is too shy or uncomfortable to ask for help. Everyone learns best in a different way, so a tutor needs to be…

The most important thing for a tutor to do is build confidence in students. The students that approach tutors are usually ones that are struggling to cope with school and activities, leading to them falling behind on their academics. This can seriously lower their confidence and make them question their abilities. As a tutor, it should be their…

The most import thing a tutor can realise is that everyone has different expectations and preferences for learning and those criteria need to be what shapes how you teach individual students. Just as importantly however, you need to be constantly searching for the root of the problem your student is having; -Is their basic math knowledge…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them encouragement to explore and believe in their own abilities. It is equally important to take the time to discover how the student learns best and make sure that they understand the concept and are not just memorising the answer. This can be achieved with interactive learning by…

First of all, communication is definitely vital in order to engage with tutees. Before any information exchange can take place, both parties should be able to relay their thoughts and express their opinions as clear as possible to avoid misconceptions. This skill is essential in the case of tutoring, as most of the knowledge exchange are only…

Inside AustinvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia worked on understanding stem and leaf plots and revising key assessment topics from the term.

In Year 10, Ethan practised solving quadratic equations and used completing the square for factorising quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Liam focused on sketching trigonometric graphs of the form Acos(Bx + C) + D, as well as simplifying complex trig expressions and differentiating exponentials using the chain rule.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student arrived to tutoring without class notes, making it harder to align methods; as the tutor put it, "he has promised to bring his books next week."

In Year 11 Maths Methods, a student's tendency to shortcut steps when confident—especially with familiar problems—led to small but recurring errors until prompted to slow down.

For a Year 10 Science assignment, missing evaluation and limitations discussion meant higher-mark sections couldn't be tackled before the due date.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student's fatigue after medical leave made it difficult for him to sustain focus and motivation during problem-solving sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Austinville tutor noticed a big shift in Lily's approach to word problems—she started the session hesitant about using matrices but, after some practice, was able to confidently complete problems like 2A – B and apply matrix notation without prompting.

Meanwhile, Ethan, a senior student, went from struggling with graphical questions to solving them much faster by the end of his lesson, showing real improvement in both speed and accuracy.

In Year 7 maths, Eve had been using the wrong formula for triangles but now calculates area correctly every time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mudgeeraba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mudgeeraba Creek State School.
