As a tutor I believe the most important things that I could do for a student is to be there for them when they need help, clearing the doubts they have for better understanding and help them to understand a type of problem so they can solve different problems of the same type. I think being a student is my greatest strength as a tutor as I can…

The primary reason why a student may hire a tutor is to give them the in-depth understanding of "Why" the concept is the way it hence. Hence, explaining them the core concept, which enables them to solve the problems during their exams and assignments without having any second doubts. Additionally, as a part of tutor, it is my responsibility to…

There are two most essential things that a tutor should do for a student: motivation and guidance. A student only find a tutor when he finds difficulties in learning a subject and is not confident in taking the exams. Therefore, the first thing that each tutor needs to do is to encourage the students to study and face their own problems.…

Understanding and discipline. Everyone have their own unique circumstances and so being understanding about it is extremely important for any tutor. But balancing it out with disciplinary and rigorous prepping goes a long way to boost a student's study. My communication skills are what defined my teaching. To be there to support the student academically and psychologically. Tutoring is a more private setting than teaching in school, I will get to know more about the students and connect with them on a deeper level. This enables me to assist them on their journey of growing up, helping them with their study and listen to their struggles if they are…

I believe that the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to encourage their passion for the subject and to help them develop a desire to learn. When a student is motivated and engaged in their learning, they are more likely to put in the effort and time required to succeed. As a tutor, I would work to foster this motivation by…

According to me, a tutor can help his student improve and be a stepping stone in achieving his goals . A tutor can make his student be a better person , and can inculcate the genuine love of learning and knowledge and showing others what it looks like to be passionate about his future. Sharing knowledge with the students is the main thing but…

I think one of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence within them. The tutor needs to make sure that all the questions of the student are answered really well. Most importantly, the tutor needs to be a role model for the student. I believe as a tutor, it is important to teach the subject to the student in a way that is enjoyable while still delivering the knowledge across. Give them a safe space to ask questions and learn in a way they enjoy and are progressing in. There is no point in being over qualified and intelligent, but unapproachable and closed off. To truly understand a topic, you have to be able to explain it in a way that anyone could understand. I believe the most important thing you can do as a tutor is…

Local Reviews

It was easy to get started on Maths tutoring for my son. I registered interest online and received a phone call soon afterwards. I advised my requirements and received a text from our new tutor within a few days. We have had one session so far. I was impressed by how knowledgeable the tutor was, and how relevant she made the session to my sons needs.
Elisabeth, Balwyn North

Inside Balwyn NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Charlie practised simplifying fractions and adding and subtracting fractions using number lines for visual support.

In Year 8, Olivia explored concepts of percentages as well as GST and discounts, applying these to real-world scenarios.

For a Year 11 student, Daniel worked through integration by substitution and recognition methods, focusing on how to approach related SAC questions with extended mathematical reasoning.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was hesitant to attempt harder algebra problems, tending to focus on familiar questions; as the tutor noted, "she circled back to easy equations instead of tackling the more challenging ones." This meant less progress with complex substitution and balancing tasks.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student often skipped writing out full working when applying ratios or unpacking redox titration questions—errors in calculation crept in unnoticed.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 Maths student leaned heavily on their calculator for trigonometric simplifications but missed opportunities to strengthen mental fluency; this slowed problem-solving under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Balwyn North tutor recently saw a Year 9 student who used to hesitate when solving equations now confidently add and subtract terms on both sides to isolate x, tackling problems without prompting.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student who previously struggled with trig identities managed to simplify fractions using trigonometric rules and successfully differentiate inverse trig functions for the first time.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who had been guessing at shapes began accurately naming polygons with more than four sides and even transformed numerical digits into English up to 999 without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bede's School.
