Interpersonal communication and analytical assessment skills are the most important things in tutoring. Even if the same grade, each student has a different brain and understanding level. As a tutor, I not just only deliver content, but I consider understanding students' preferred learning styles as significant to make them actively participate in…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. I also believe that a tutor can act as a more relatable source of academic help instead of a teacher; a tutor can provide more in depth help outside the class room. I can sympathise with the students in terms of…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to help them develop the required skills to succeed on their own. Brute memorisation is rarely ever enough. My aim is to unpack the underlying mechanics of each concept so that my students have what it takes to tackle problems independently. My teaching style is based on student interaction. I…

A tutor should be able to provide lessons to a student which are tailored to their abilities and learning style. This is something which students can't always get in their regular classes and a tutor could provide through being attentive. They should also be able to make students feel confident in their abilities and iron out any weaknesses. My…

From my experience, the most important thing/skill as a tutor is to understand what students are not understanding. I believe that the most effective way to increase academic score/grade is to find the weakness/ topics that we do not quite get. Tutors should find those in students quickly and resolve it by teaching effectively. One of the biggest…

Make the students feel confident on themselves and making them trying out the questions independently first. And let them k know that they can learn more from their mistakes and it’s a normal thing to make mistakes in the classroom. And make them feel comfortable with me and make them feel secure. One of the most important things a tutor can do is help students see the significance and practicality of the concepts they are learning. Rather than just teaching for the sake of memorizing, a great tutor bridges the gap between theory and real world application, allowing students to appreciate the beauty of a subject. Because only when students…

As far as my understanding, as a tutor, he/she always needs to motivate their students to think more widely and creatively. It is true, initially, they will fail several times. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is that a tutor must be well aware of what he/she is teaching and must be an expert on it. Without this it's a waste of both a student's and teacher's time and money. For this I personally need to get prepared by learning teaching materials and technics at home before I start a lesson. We are very happy with the tutoring and our tutor is very good with my children. They are really enjoying it and this speaks volumes as they were both very opposed to the idea!

Inside BardonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Oskar worked on algebra and number patterns using his Year 5 Maths Resource book, with extra practice set for homework.

A Year 7 student used real-world Kokoda Challenge event data to calculate average speeds between checkpoints, applying rate and time calculations in a practical context.

For a Year 10 student, recent lessons included probability concepts, normal distribution curves, and an introduction to derivatives and exponential distributions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 algebra, skipping the habit of back-checking led to "a few minor errors which checking could easily fix," especially when fractions were involved.

A Year 11 student tackling derivatives sometimes began new questions before finishing previous ones, causing confusion and unfinished working.

In upper primary, homework in multiplication was occasionally left incomplete or not attempted with pencil and paper, despite reminders.

For a Year 8 word problem set, rushing to answer before fully understanding the question resulted in misinterpreted tasks; as one tutor observed, "he needs to work on fully understanding what a question is asking before attempting it."

Recent Achievements

One Bardon tutor noted a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess through division questions now talks aloud while working, and has started double-checking answers with pencil and paper—something he'd never done before.

In Year 8 maths, another student who often avoided larger worded problems has begun breaking them into steps using new strategies, showing clear independence in tackling multi-part questions.

A Year 4 learner, previously hesitant with subtraction, now solves bigger addition and subtraction tasks out loud, explaining her thinking as she works. Last week she completed her homework without any reminders or prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashgrove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
