I think encouraging students to develop self-learning skills plays the important role in educational networks as we cannot tutor them forever. We should not only assist students only to understand the materials provided but also teach them the skills of how to learn effectively and what to do when encountering the new lesson/content of knowledge…

Actually speaking, the tutor should focus on potential development rahter than merely improving the skills of a student. It could be best tutors can adopt practices such as NLP ( neuro linguistic programming) to boost rapid learning of a student. But for that only truly commited tutors would raise their hands. Since it reqires a lot of hard yards.…

The most important things a tutor can do to a student is to not teach, but to make them understand what is being taught, and thereby boost their confidence. Merely parroting out concepts to students would get the job done, but will not help the student understand any better, or feel any more confident. Instead, understanding where the student is…

I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is put love for a subject in a student. Make them understand that studies aren't a pain and that education can be fun and fulfilling as well. Being able to take it at the student's pace is vital and it brings confidence to the student that they're not being rushed. I'm very patient and compassionate,…

Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

To me, the most important thing is to teach and make the student not to feel any less of him or herself. I consider the following as critical things a tutor can do for a student: - Ability to empathise with the student. This helps with connecting with the students, and creates a safe learning space for them - Ability to listen. In the classroom settings, some teachers are unable to connect with all the students due to the large number and rigid…

A tutor should be patient and understanding of a student's mistakes. Inside Bentleigh EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Poppy practised division strategies and reviewed perimeter concepts using her school homework as a base.

In Year 8, Max focused on simplifying algebraic fractions and solving simultaneous equations, including work with partial fractions for deeper understanding.

Ava, in Year 10, revised key skills in fractions and percentages to prepare for an upcoming test, concentrating on converting between the two forms and applying them to worded problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student began to lose track of his books and submitted late homework, especially as division and times tables were set for practice; as one tutor noted, "he's starting to forget to organise his books neatly and orderly."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on VCE Maths struggled with clarity in written working—steps were rushed or left off when using the CAS calculator, which led to confusion in vector questions.

In a Year 5 session, a lack of confidence meant Ava hesitated to start fraction addition unless prompted, slowing her progress during independent tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Bentleigh East tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip homework now completes every task and even asks for harder practice questions, showing real initiative.

In Year 8 maths, a student who previously hesitated with decimals has started working through decimal problems independently and timed himself on practice sets to push his speed.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4, who would quietly guess at answers before, now talks through her problem-solving steps out loud—especially when tackling tricky multiplication—and finished all her worded questions quickly without any help this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Valkstone Primary School.
