A tutor should ensure the student has grasped a conceptual understanding of a topic, not a superficial one. It's highly important that they encourage students to continue asking questions for clarification on grey areas, instead of leaving it ambiguous. I'm very friendly and approachable to children, so I believe my strength lies in being able to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is probably to be able to be patient and listen as well as understand what aspects are difficult and also to have the ability to make the student aware that it is okay to make mistakes and to make them feel comfortable My strengths as a tutor have to be the ability to distinguish what areas of…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them not only build the skills they need for the subject they're being tutored in, but also to build the skills to be confident of themselves within it as well. From my experience being tutored both in maths and for an instrument, that was something my tutors helped me with,…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to practice empathy in order to ensure the student knows they're in a safe environment where they are allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. Being kind and really listening to what they say to you is also essential, as you don't want them to feel like they can't talk to you, as this will result in…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students build the confidence and skills to learn independently. A tutor's role isn't only to explain concepts, but also to equip students with the strategies and mindset to approach new material independently. By guiding them to understand the basics deeply and think critically, tutors can…

A tutor or at least a teacher is someone who can give students a helping hand, perhaps a friend is too informal but someone they can relate to. I think being able to understand your student and what makes them improve or how they can improve is also essential as a tutor and a teacher. It is useless to spoon feed facts and knowledge to a student if…

I think it is important to understand each students requirements and aptitude. Same teaching techniques cannot be applied to everyone. So a teacher has to be mature and experienced enough to help students. I have a strong connection with academia, so I understand students' needs well. The most important thing a tutor can do is to enable a student with essential skills, both related to subject taught, as well as life skills. Inspire a genuine passion for the subject, rather than just learning for the sake of school. The most important role a tutor plays for a student is to assist the student in developing their own agency in their subject area. When we believe a subject is beyond us, or we're not smart enough to grasp it, we shy away and don't push ourselves as hard. Often this belief has developed from what others have told us or from not having the right…

Instead of focusing solely on rote learning, I aim to help students understand the why and how of what they're learning. By providing real-world examples and context, I hope to spark their curiosity and encourage them to think…

Inside Beverly HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Cooper worked on simplifying ratios with fractions and different units, and also practiced multiplying decimals and dividing fractions using school homework.

For Year 8, Emily focused on solving linear equations involving fractions as well as rearranging expressions to make a given pronumeral the subject, often using worded problems from her textbook.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Lucas revised how to find x- and y-intercepts for lines on the Cartesian plane and used these intercepts to graph equations by hand, including verifying points that lay on given lines.

Recent Challenges

In recent high school sessions, difficulty breaking down long worded problems in algebra led to incomplete working and confusion; as one tutor observed, "he needs to write down his working out or draw on the diagram to fill in missing values."

During Year 10 financial maths, not all calculation steps were shown when interpreting tax tables or rearranging interest formulas—resulting in errors and missed marks.

At a primary level, careless layout in graphs (such as omitting spaces between columns) made answers harder to interpret.

In a Year 8 geometry task, skipping steps with negative signs while rearranging equations caused persistent sign errors that slowed progress.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Beverly Hills noticed several genuine breakthroughs recently. One high school student, who used to struggle with rearranging algebraic expressions—especially when negative numbers were involved—can now solve linear equations independently and even eliminates fractions without prompting.

Another high schooler previously hesitated with financial maths but is now able to calculate taxes, commission, and compound interest unaided, and can spot calculation errors on his own.

A younger student, who often mixed up the x and y axes while plotting points, now labels coordinates accurately and checks his work before moving on to new graphing challenges.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Penshurst Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Beverly Hills Public School.
