Regardless of a child's needs, it is important for tutors and teachers to approach each child with empathy, respect, and a willingness to adapt their teaching style to suit the child's individual learning needs. By doing so, they can help every child reach their full potential and succeed in their academic and personal pursuits. Every child is…

I think one of the most important things about tutoring is to help students not only understand what they need to do, but also why they need to do it, alongside techniques to perform well in assessments. My biggest strength as a tutor is my ability to explain concepts from the ground up. Because my own understanding of maths and science is built…

The tutor should understand his subject matter to be able to deliver complicated ideas to the students simply and concisely. If the tutor cannot do so, he should further his knowledge of that subject matter. I love to use descriptive and outside the box methods to understand mathematical concepts. Because school teaching is restrict by time, the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient and adapt to their learning style. Not everyone learns the same way, with the same words or at the same time. It is of utmost importance to showcase your belief in them and empower them to enjoy what they are studying and not just do it for the sake of school but do it for…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to support them though their learning and to be a set of ears which a struggling student can go to and tell their problems without fear of judgement. Helping a student visualize the portions they learn would be the best thing a tutor can do for a student. If a student is able to visualize a portion, the student will be able to learn the concept and use it to apply in various applications. Making a student fall in love with what they learn is the most important thing, as I experienced the same…

Also, can make a proper timetable and show a way how to study strategically without getting bored or stressed I can easily amalgamate with my student as a friend and I think that's my most powerful side as a tutor. Teach students HOW to learn in future. Give them techniques to implement into their everyday school routine that will, in the long run, benefit their understanding. I believe it is equally important to really listen to students properly. As someone who has received tutoring before, when your tutor misinterprets you, it is difficult to get to the…

A tutor's primary objective is to ensure that the student truly understands the content, and while doing so, the tutor must present the material in an interesting and engaging manner. A tutor should be able to provide a better understanding of concepts not just show them how to do questions and then copy working in other formats for future exams. They should also be able to make it seem more enjoyable as students perform better when they actually enjoy a subject compared to if they are just doing it for a better ATAR score.…

I think that the best thing to do when tutoring is allow the students free rein when answering questions, as I have often found that almost all of their learning comes from when they make mistakes. I tend to try to give them only small nudges when getting them to complete a question, and reduce the amount of my interference over preceding…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their cognitive load. Focusing on how much the student can process during a given session, allows an effective learning plan to be created. In turn, the student will be able to establish deeper understandings and be able to reach their full potential. My strengths are…

Inside BictonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Xavier focused on adding and subtracting larger numbers, practising three-digit addition and takeaways to build confidence with bigger values.

In Year 7, Alice revised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages as well as tackling measurement conversions such as millimetres to kilometres using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Max worked through algebraic equations involving variables alongside adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions that include variables.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student struggled to set out addition and subtraction clearly, often omitting working for multi-step problems—she sometimes is too quick to give an answer or gets confused about what number is used for what part of solving the question.

In Year 8, a student's decimals work was held back by difficulty lining up columns when adding or subtracting, making errors harder to spot.

For a senior student (Year 10), test revision focused only on familiar fraction types; less time went into practicing new question formats.

When homework was missed without notice in Years 7 and 9, gaps in skill development persisted into following lessons.

Recent Achievements

A Bicton tutor noticed a big shift in one high school student, Poppy, who previously hesitated with algebra but now rearranges equations on her own and is even tackling multiplication with brackets—something she used to avoid.

Another secondary student, Chloe, moved from needing hints to solve improper-to-mixed fraction questions to working through most of them confidently and making only minor mistakes.

With a younger learner, Xavier, sessions have focused on building independence; he now counts digits without being prompted and tries new problems solo instead of waiting for help. Last week, he finished all his addition exercises unassisted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bicton Primary School.
