The most important thing a tutor can do is to realise when a student actually understands a topic, or if they need more help. Too often students will say that they understand but they don't want to admit they still don't. The tutor should be able to break down a subject in multiple ways, and choose which way fits particular students' learning…

Being able to communicate with students in a supportive manner and engage the student to be interested in their respective subjects and overall…

A tutor's role goes beyond just imparting knowledge. They should build confidence and self-belief, create a personalized and supportive learning environment, and encourage active learning and critical thinking. Clear explanations, achievable goals, and constructive feedback are essential. A tutor should also foster independence, provide guidance…

I feel a lot of people can teach but the most important thing a tutor can do is to motivate and reassure the student that they have the capability to achieve great results with hard work and that they should not give up with things get hard. I believe that I am good at breaking down complex topics to help struggling students understand the topic…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student/s is to show that they have a genuine interest in what they want to accomplish and make them feel that the tutor is willing to do everything in their power to reach their goals. It is also extremely important for the tutor to encourage their student at every opportunity in order to boost…

I believe a tutor should help prepare and encourage students to be more competitive in their school exams, rather than just simply re teach what they learn. A tutor is crucial to helping a student unlock their full potential in their studies, by not only preparing them well ahead, but by also teaching them how to study and learn themselves. I can…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students believe in themselves. When students feel confident, they’re more open to learning and tackling challenges. A good tutor creates a space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes without fear of judgment. It’s also about making lessons relatable and…

Is to empathise with the student. Tell them that you know what it's like to be in their shoes, and put their minds at ease with your ability to translate your expertise to them. At the end of the day, the student wants to improve their confidence. Confidence can be built by gaining the students trust in your Mathematical or Physics ability. My…

The most important thing for a tutor is to not feed the student to information but to guide them as they learn. It's to teach the students how to learn independently and invoke within them a passion and a want for more learning and knowledge. To show students that studying is not a chore but a tool and a privilege that they can use. As a young…

Explain. If a tutor can explain a concept in a way a student can understand and then is able to remember it and be able to apply it, the tutor has succeeded in his role. Also being able to listen to students, as a tutor should be able to find small mistakes and correct them as questions require perfection to some degree to achieve maximum marks.…

I have always thought that a tutor's main objective is to inspire the student by showing the interesting sides of whatever is being taught. As a tutor, it's my objective to show mathematics is essentially a language in which relationships are translated to number which would otherwise be intangible and impossible to observe with the naked eye. By…

Most importantly a tutor should understand the goals and needs of each student individually - what they find difficult and why they struggle with certain concepts. Subsequently, tutors should teach students the concepts and ensure they understand how to solve problems, this provides lifelong problem solving skills rather than memorised methods to…

I have had many experiences with teachers and tutors during my HSC years and most of them would end up explaining the questions. Help them gain interest in what they're trying to study/learn. The problem with kids not wanting to learn isn't because the subject is hard, usually it's because they have no interest in the subject whatsoever. There's always a way to show someone the appeal of every single subject. It can be hard but it's very possible and many teachers and…

Inside BidwillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sofia focused on solving inequalities and understanding gradients in linear equations, using practice problems to reinforce each step.

For Year 11, Omar reviewed non-linear equations for an upcoming exam by tackling challenging worksheet questions, then shifted to English to develop ideas for a discursive essay based on scenes from "Pleasantville."

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Saanvi practiced double-digit addition and subtraction and was tested on her 9 and 12 times tables, with extra reading from "Danny's Dollars" to support comprehension skills.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students struggled with organization and written clarity.

In Year 9 algebra, one student's layout was flagged: "needs to show working out," making it difficult to spot errors when expanding and simplifying expressions.

A Year 11 student preparing for trigonometry with obtuse angles often avoided revisiting past mistakes—this meant minor errors persisted through revision, especially in exam settings.

At the primary level, a Year 3 student faced confusion adding numbers to zero; as noted, "the lack of understanding makes it difficult to add numbers to 0."

The impact is visible: lost marks and time spent retracing steps instead of building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Bidwill tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to guess quietly during algebra sessions now pausing to ask clarifying questions when stuck—something he never did before.

In senior maths, another high schooler who'd previously needed constant hints with network concepts recently completed an entire assignment independently without outside help.

For a younger student, reading fluency took a leap: she not only read "The Hungry Caterpillar" aloud but started sounding out unfamiliar words herself, rather than waiting for prompts from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mt Druitt Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bidwill Public School.
