A tutor should be understanding of their students' learning and study patterns and help them in a way that will benefit their students the most. A tutor should personally support and encourage their student to become more confident in themselves and their study areas alongside explaining content. I am able to use a range of different explaining…

A few important things a tutor can do for a student is to be understanding and non judgmental. A tutor should listen to the students' concern/s and work at the same pace as the student, not giving them too little or too much work. Always make sure to let the student know you are there to help them and not to keep quiet when a problem arises. In…

A tutor can play a very important role in motivating the student so that he can understand and achieve. Thus, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instilling a strong belief in them that they can achieve whatever they want, provided they are giving their best. Most of the subjects that I have listed, I love studying them. I am…

Active listening. I believe this is the most important trait and thing a tutor can do for a student. This is because our role is to educate and a way of guiding students to take in information in the best or most efficient way, and part of that is listening actively to what the student wants out of tutoring sessions and adjusting however possible…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can and should do for a student is to be adaptable to their circumstances and learning style. Each student is different, and a tutor should be ready to change their teaching style to suit the students needs to facilitate the student's development. This gives the student the best chance to succeed. I…

The most important things a tutor can do are the students are as follows: Learn to respect the questions and learning ability of the student. Be an excellent listener. Be willing to share plenty of own experiences. Be honest, flexible, reliable and confidante for the student. A tutor can also be the first go to person for the student if…

I firmly believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to personalise their learning experience. Every student is different and learns in their own way, being able to adapt to each student is what differentiates a good tutor from an amazing tutor. I think my strengths as a tutor is being able to find the best method of teaching…

I think that the tutor acts as a mentor for the student. In this role, the tutor should encourage the students to think critically in order to find answers to their questions. By providing the means to discover the answers for themselves, the tutor ensures that the student does not merely address the 'what' of the question but is also able to…

I consider guidance as the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Teachers are important but sometimes they can be carried away by teaching a large group of students in the class. Tutors are there to give personal support to the students to help not just their academic development and also emotionally What most teachers cannot do is…

I think the most important things that a tutor can do is to instil in students the drive to learn more about a subject, fix any misconceptions they may have, and to make them feel comfortable enough to ask any questions they have. I think my strengths come from finding gaps in a student’s knowledge and using appropriate measures to rectify them.…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

To encourage them to persevere even when they find their studies difficult. My opinion is that equipping them with the knowledge they need is only a small part of the job. The most important things a tutor can do to a student is to not teach, but to make them understand what is being taught, and thereby boost their confidence. Merely parroting out concepts to students would get the job done, but will not help the student understand any better, or feel any more confident. Instead, understanding where the student is…

For me, a tutor is not just a source of knowledge and experience for their students. More importantly, a tutor is a mentor for their students and have the ability to encourage them to excel in their studies. The main thing is being able to effectively explain a topic or clear students' doubts. If the student is able to explain the topic to others, I believe that is a good indication of their understanding and shows that a tutor has successfully explained a topic or cleared doubts. For a student, the worst thing a tutor can do is to strike fear into them about their progress or their work. I understand that teachers don't always have time to help students one-on-one and that tutors can help bridge the gap. Inside Blackburn SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ethan practised solving linear equations and worked on fraction summation and subtraction for fluency.

In Year 10, Emily focused on quadratic functions, including finding the equation of a line and tackling algebraic measurement problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Aisha prepared for her Mathematical Methods SAC by revising polynomials—specifically long division, remainder theorem, and factor theorem—and explored domain and range using set notation in function questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, a student was encouraged to organize and regularly update her summary book, but struggled to recall information from earlier in the year—"remembering the small information and organizing summary book" remained a challenge before exams.

Meanwhile, during Year 8 algebra sessions, another student's written work lacked clarity: "Need to add more step during the calculation," making it difficult to spot simplification errors.

Under SAC conditions in Year 12 Methods, one student second-guessed solutions and rushed into answers without planning—"he seemed to be second guessing himself and talking things over very rapidly." This led to confusion and missed marks when tackling multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Blackburn South tutor noted a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask questions now openly requests help when stuck, which has made her algebra sessions much more productive.

A Year 11 student, after repeated struggles with graphing circular functions, began drawing the graphs accurately and independently identifying transformations without prompting.

In another session, a Year 7 student who once mixed up fraction operations is now confidently finding lowest common denominators and completing multi-step problems on her own.

Last week, one senior student collected past exams themselves to review weak areas before their upcoming assessment.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Luke the Evangelist School.
