The most important thing I think a tutor can do for a student is to help teach them in a safe, non-judgemental and trust worthy environment. If the student feels comfortable in the environment, they are more willing to open their minds and be more willing to learn whereas if they felt uncomfortable they would be more closed off and fearful. Not…

Inside BlakehurstTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Blake worked on understanding circumference, radius, and diameter of circles as well as converting between units of measurement.

In Year 8, Sam tackled algebra by expanding and simplifying equations before starting to plot points and solve linear equations using step-by-step methods.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Alex reviewed trigonometry concepts in preparation for an upcoming test and clarified key statistical terminology during the lesson.

Recent Challenges

Solving questions passively led a Year 8 student to frequent calculation errors in long division, especially when several steps were involved.

In a recent Year 10 session, one learner hesitated to write out their working in algebra because of nerves about making mistakes. This slowed progress and made it hard to spot where they went wrong.

A younger student (Year 5) often left homework incomplete and sometimes mixed up key vocabulary like 'radius' and 'diameter,' which then affected their confidence tackling new geometry problems. These habits led to missed connections and slower improvement between sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Blakehurst tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with exam-style algebra questions now tackling the trickier ones independently and even working through mistakes without frustration.

A Year 9 session saw a student who'd previously mixed up angle types not only recalling geometric terms but using a protractor correctly for the first time.

In primary, a Year 4 learner has started finishing homework before lessons—something she hadn't done until last month—and solved two-digit multiplication using the "smile" method all on her own during their latest session.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Everything is going well so far with Georgette and Sophia seems to enjoy the hour she has with her this week.  She appreciates some of the new strategies she has learnt.

The tutoring is proving beneficial and enjoyable, and we are keen to continue with Jessica if she is also happy to continue.

Cordelia is very happy with Rory's tutoring.  Rory has certainly been a big help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as South Hurstville—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mater Dei Catholic Primary School.
