I think it is extremely important for a tutor to be adaptable. Different students have differing learning styles and needs, and therefore, to help different students, you need to be able to tailor your tutoring to individualised approaches. Furthermore, rather than just giving the children the answers, as a tutor it is important to be able to help…

First thing which I can assure to all my students is that I'll make them understand the concepts clear so that they can remember and apply it forever in their life. Also I think a good teacher has to teach the subject from a student point of view, so that we can understand where they face problem in understanding the concept and help them to…

The most essential thing is for a tutor to give the student the tools they need to succeed and instil a learning attitude in them. It's important to show the student their own potential and what they can achieve if they put in the work. I am very friendly and patient, I am always open to hear from the student and incorporate their ideas into the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students feel safe to try, fail, and grow. Many students come into tutoring thinking they are "just bad at maths," and it's our job as tutors to help break that mindset. From my own experience, I know how powerful it is when someone takes the time to understand your gaps, explain things at…

Forging a want to learn. Learning to read and write shouldn't be a chore; it's what makes people human. A tutor can say they've done a good job if the student chooses to work on their skills and improving themselves even out of lessons. Empathy and openness. A tutor needs a good rapport with students. You have to earn their trust and confidence so they will do the work you want them to do. The lessons need to have variety so the student does not become bored. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand and support them. A student excelling in their studies is not simply a routine of worksheets and practice essays, but learning simple yet effective methods for studying such as flash cards, mind maps and games. It also goes beyond studying and into routines students can…

Most importantly, putting time and efforts after students till their basics are clear is the key for a tutor to use. After clearing the basics, revising and revisiting the already done work is equally important. Having had experience in tutoring, patience is my strength. The most important things a tutor can do are build a student’s confidence, create a safe space for questions, and teach in a way that suits their learning style. I know how competitive and burdensome academics can be, especially for students in high achieving environments ( e.g Melbourne high), so I believe being a pillar of understanding and…

I think being a good tutor should be encouraging and passionate. And tutors should know what students need for help on their strengths and weakness. Also, tutors also should always encourage students to be brave in asking questions so the students can get faster improvement. Especially for young age students, they are hard to focus but it's…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. Inside BulleenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Chloe focused on operations with negative numbers and began working through fraction concepts using visual aids.

A Year 9 student tackled solving equations and revisited her recent school test, targeting areas she got wrong and clarifying simultaneous equations and indices.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student worked through finance chapters—reviewing compound interest calculations and completing revision questions ahead of an upcoming SAC to reinforce understanding of real-world applications.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was set targeted homework but often left these tasks incomplete, which limited consolidation—one tutor noted, "She should find some time to do some homework questions that I set for her."

In Year 12 Maths Methods, a tendency to misread or rush through exam-style questions meant correct methods were applied to the wrong part, resulting in lost marks: "she does the right method but provides an incorrect answer which the question may not be particularly asking."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 learner hesitated to persist when stuck on trigonometry problems and would quickly move on without exploring alternative approaches.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bulleen recently noticed a Year 10 student who had struggled with simultaneous equations finally solve several complex examples independently, after weeks of needing step-by-step guidance.

Another high schooler, preparing for VCE maths, reviewed past exam papers and confidently tackled previously missed questions—she could now explain her approach without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to avoid asking for help has started openly voicing when she's stuck on fractions, which let her master adding unlike denominators during their last session. The lesson finished with her completing all fraction tasks accurately on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bulleen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Clement of Rome School.
