I believe the most important aspect of being a tutor is being able to establish a supportive learning environment. A positive learning environment fosters engagement, confidence, and a willingness to learn. I think my strengths are being able to communicate clearly and effectively. This is vital when explaining concepts in various ways to…

The most important things I can do for a student are to listen attentively, offer guidance with patience, and provide support tailored to their individual needs. Building a trusting relationship, fostering a positive learning environment, and encouraging their curiosity are also key priorities. Ultimately, my goal is to empower students to thrive…

Being patient and understand their strengths and weakness. Even though you are tutor to them, be a friend too, so that we would be able to let them focus on the education. I am patient and able to give them a lot of practices to expand their…

I believe that tutors should help students reach their own personal learning goals. Each student should leave their sessions feeling happy and that they have accomplished/learnt something they didn’t know before. It is important that every student feels they understand the content and their educational needs are met with enthusiasm and interest.…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student: - Help them to achieve their goals easier - Assist the students to find the motivation to study but not putting pressure on them - Listening to the requirements from both students and tutor to gain respect from each side as well as to collaborate more efficiently - Create the…

Apart from teaching them academic subjects and helping them to score good grades in their school, a tutor can also teach them life lessons which would not only enhance their personality but also make them a better person altogether. I am a patient person which is a very important must-have for a tutor so that the student can learn things at their…

Assist in enabling students to reach their goals. Create a learning environment where the student feels comfortable to be themselves, make mistakes, take chances, be creative and therefore, grow. My strengths would include being patient, intuitive and empathetic with students. I generally speak succinctly and try not to overload the student with…

Teach and help them learn by listening to what it is that they need help with. Each student is different so developing an individual way with each one is very important as a tutor. Honesty, if something is wrong with something I can tell a student how to fix it straight away. Another strength of mine is teaching someone how to do something rather…

Understanding that different students learn in different styles, and catering to all of those different needs, as well as not making a student feel silly. I am an excellent communicator, friendly and very approachable. Students relate to me because I had tutors for years! I am able to put into words and demonstrate how to do things in a way…

Inside BulliTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Josh worked on solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula and also tackled word problems involving quadratics.

For Year 9, Sarah practised sketching graphs and revisited algebraic factorisation strategies, including product and sum methods.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Daniel focused on linear equations and strengthened his understanding of rates and ratios through targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student in Bulli struggled with attention to detail when using pronumerals in algebra—assuming the order from previous questions led to errors, as one tutor observed: "He kept mixing up x and y, which changed his answer."

In Year 11, a student's exam performance was affected by feeling overwhelmed under pressure, resulting in incomplete solutions during timed tasks.

For a Year 7 learner, over-reliance on spell-check instead of practicing spelling meant written work improved slowly.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student avoided showing working for maths problems, believing answers alone were sufficient; this made it difficult to spot where misunderstandings occurred.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bulli noticed that a Year 9 student, who previously struggled with parabolas, is now confidently describing the shapes of graphs and can quickly identify their equations without hesitation.

In another high school session, Erin was able to use both elimination and substitution methods effectively for solving equations—last term she would get stuck on which approach to try first, but this time she switched between them smoothly.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once hesitated to use finger counting for maths problems now does so openly after some encouragement, allowing him to tackle larger addition questions with far less frustration than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Thirroul Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.
