Other than imparting the lessons in school, I think being able to empathize with the students is key in effective teaching. As a matter of strategy, what I will do is to meet them where they are academically, then prepare a plan and implement it to be able to meet our goal(s). I have the ability to relate with young kids well. Raising three…

I will consistently encourage all my students to always try, and practise, and try again, until they master whatever they were first struggling with. Their dreams become my dreams for them, so I will never let my students give up on reaching their goals. Improvements do not happen overnight, but whenever they do happen, no matter how small, I…

The most vital thing a tutor can do is to make study fun , yes, a student who just remained worried about studies and exams should no longer be worried if he or she has a tutor . A tutor should be someone on whom a student could rely on about their studies and performance. apart for that , a tutor should understand a student’s weaknesses and…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to identify their strengths and areas of improvement in particular to improve the student's overall performance in a particular subject area. Thus, I believe it is really important to enable the student to feel empowered about their learning through support and encouragement. This…

In my opinion, a tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

Like I said, patience and comfortable environment created between the tutor and the student. Rest all can be taken care of by referring to the respective books and study materials. I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

To reassure them that having a tutor and needing a bit of extra help is nothing to be ashamed of. Moreover than learning the tasks, helping them feel they're capable of more than they think they are. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to put in time. They need to act as if it's not just a job which pays. Prepping lessons early, helping with questions outside of tutoring time, marking tests. All of these examples show a great tutor. - I put a lot of care into my work. - I love seeing others thrive through my help. - I…

I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. I think this allows tutors to strategize methods in helping students progress, learn and succeed. This must be done with patience, constant assessment of student's progress, and…

As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. I think the most important thing is making the student feel comfortable asking questions. A tutor should focus on understanding where the student is getting stuck and help them build confidence, not just give answers. I'm patient and I don't rush students. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them want to study a topic, to present a topic in a certain way that makes the student more enthusiastic to learn. Inside BurnsideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Armando worked on comparing fractions and decimals using number lines, as well as converting between units.

For Year 10, Ella focused on surface area and volume of three-dimensional shapes like spheres and prisms, applying formulas to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jay revised bivariate statistics by interpreting residual plots and working through exponential regression questions from a revision guide.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student's working was described as "hard to follow," with cramped handwriting and inconsistent labelling—making it easy to lose track during matrix problems.

A Year 11 student left several assignment requirements unclear until the last minute; as a tutor noted, "he needs to check the task sheet closely before submitting."

Meanwhile, in Year 7 algebra, skipping written steps when simplifying expressions led to repeated errors with negatives.

For a primary learner, focus drifted quickly during longer tasks—work became untidy and mistakes crept in as attention waned near the end of each session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Burnside noticed that a Year 10 student who used to hesitate when stuck on algebraic problems now confidently asks for help as soon as something isn't clear, rather than guessing or staying silent.

In another session, a Year 12 student independently scored B+ on his first two practice exams and pinpointed areas he wants to improve, showing real ownership over his learning.

Meanwhile, a younger student who'd previously relied heavily on reminders is now tackling worksheets mostly solo and only seeks clarification when truly needed. Last week, she remembered how to convert decimals to percentages and got every question right on her class test.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Burnside Primary School.
