I think the most important thing I can do for a student is really just build their foundational understanding of the content. With a strong foundational understanding the students can be more confident and creative in their application in the concepts. I have two main strengths as a tutor. First, I bring a very strong working knowledge of the…

Finding out whether a student is a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner is important. By discovering how the student learns best, I believe he will be able to reach his true potential. To do this, a tutor must be malleable in his teaching methods and communication. Furthermore, it is crucial that the tutor and student create a bond that reaches…

I think it's a question of what a tutor can BE rather than do. I found in my experience that I always responded to teachers who were enthusiastic and portrayed a genuine care for the learning of the student. In a metaphorical sense, the tutor must think like a student in an empathetic way rather than merely be a one way stream of instruction. If a…

Provide them with strategies to deal with any type of problem. To give them to confidence to achieve their potential. To teach them so they can teach others. Patient by nature. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to what they need and make sure to push them only to their highest point of productivity. Every student has different goals and learns in a different way so it is the responsibility of the tutor to cater to those needs. I am able to foster and maintain strong connections with…

In my opinion, building a student’s confidence and providing friendly assistance is the best any tutor can do for their students. As someone who has received tutoring in the past, I know how much of a difference these simple things can make to a nervous or hesitant student. I believe my strongest attributes as a tutor are that I am very patient,…

I believe improving the student/s confidence in their own ability is a major factor in academic success. Without confidence and self-belief, I feel as though the work ethic is likely to not be as consistent and effective in their studies. Therefore, promoting and encouraging a positive mindset to the student I believe would significantly influence…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, foster independent thinking, and create a safe space where they feel comfortable asking questions. It's not just about helping them get the right answers, but about helping them understand the process and develop the tools to tackle future challenges on…

I think it is important to be adaptable, each student and each age group will learn differently. Even moreso, I think it is vital that tutors are patient, listening to their students and trying to make them feel as comfortable as possible even when faced with a challenge. I think as a tutor and in general, I am very hard working, and will be …

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn for themselves. It is easy to rote memorize a formula or a text, but to be able to teach someone how they can teach themselves and to show them how to problem solve so that they can attack problems independently is far more valuable I believe my strengths as a…

A tutor needs to be able to make sessions engaging and enjoyable so their students will want to come back to each lesson. They need to also be able to be someone students can trust and feel comfortable with as they do spend a lot of time together. I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for students is to improve their confidence in their own abilities. Having confidence will equip them with the key tools to deal with fears and self-doubts, which are things that can significantly hinder the learning process. To do this, a tutor has to provide encouragements to students along…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to believe in them and show encouragement. Self-esteem can be extremely vulnerable during schooling years, and tutors have the power to enhance their students' level of self-confidence and sense of self-efficacy. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is support them in all aspects of their life, not just academia. By doing this, you build a strong yet professional relationship with the student, where there is mutual respect and trust. A good tutor should help their student develop a love for what they are learning. When this is done successfully, this has a knock-on effect on the student's results as they are more engaged with the content they are learning. This starts with the tutor being passionate about the content they are teaching and being determined to push the student…

Inside Burwood HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ruby worked on strengthening addition and subtraction skills and was introduced to telling time using clocks.

For Year 9, Marcus tackled expanding algebraic equations and applied these in a maths assignment for practical understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Chloe focused on mastering quadratic equations through factorising and expanding exercises, making use of step-by-step practice problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on quadratic equations often skipped showing steps in algebra, which, as a tutor noted, "hid sign errors and made mistakes harder to find." This led to confusion when checking answers and slowed progress in later questions.

In Year 8, during work on probability exercises, a student struggled to identify whether the question required "A and B" or "A or B," often not reading test prompts closely enough—this left parts of answers incomplete.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner repeatedly guessed rather than trying her own working; when distracted or unsure, she would ask for help immediately instead of attempting solutions herself.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Burwood Heights noticed one Year 11 student has stopped trying to memorise formulas and instead breaks them down visually, which helped her finally solve problems on bearings by drawing coloured diagrams—a big shift from her earlier confusion.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student recently managed to catch all the errors she made on her algebra homework and explained why they happened, showing more independence than before.

In primary sessions, a Year 3 girl who used to say "I don't know" now starts counting by twos out loud without prompting or hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burwood Library and Community Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.
