Be respectful and patient. It's essential to understand the students' needs and preferred methods of learning, as everyone's habits are so different. It's best to approach the lessons with the student's perspective in mind. I am a patient, down-to-earth person who prefers having a friendly relationship with the student so that they will feel…

A tutor should understand that different students have different levels of interests and requirements in Math. For those who merely wants to pass their exams, I would teach them the application of mathematical methods. For those who are interested in math, I would explain to them the principles and deeper logics of mathematical phenomenons beneath…

Helping them grow, both academically and in extracurricular aspects. Study wise, making sure they understand the concept of the question instead of 'how to do the question'; know what the formula represents not what the formula is. Also using the wisdom I have gained throughout the years to guide them in problem solving in things that are outside…

In my opinion, improving students' academic performance is important, but is not the ultimate goal. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach students good learning methods and improve their self-study ability, which makes them benefit for life. A tutor's duty is not only about teaching students to do specific questions, but also teaching them the methods and skills of doing all types of questions by sharing experiences and leading them to think deeply. I believe that every student is different but special in their own way. Every student should be instilled with good values so that they can grow up to be good valuable men and women. It's the responsibility of tutors to care for their students. They should use a variety of strategies to help each student become personally invested in, and take…

While a tutor's main role is to teach new concepts and help students review what they've learnt at school, I believe it is equally important to build student's confidence towards the subject and spark their interest in learning. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show them the pathway that leads to understanding of a particular concept. It is about the HOW we get to the final result rather than WHAT the final result is. A tutor is successful is the student is able to understand the reasoning behind a certain result/concept. After the tutor…

Inside Carlton NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Dylan worked through simplifying and calculating surds, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using homework examples.

For Year 10, Favour practised solving simultaneous equations and tackled linear graphs word problems.

Meanwhile, Queen (Year 10) focused on applying linear equations to solve worded questions involving real-life scenarios and reinforced her skills with extra practice from homework exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant less time reinforcing word problem strategies and missed chances to clarify errors.

In Year 10 algebra, skipping written working led to "small mistakes trying to solve in his head instead of using the paper."

For a senior student, messy or incomplete notes in calculus made back-checking difficult—one tutor observed, "she struggled recalling formulae under timed conditions because her notes were disorganized."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to explain steps aloud during fractions work; this avoidance made it harder to spot where confusion began.

Missed practice and incomplete written working often left gaps visible only at assessment time.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carlton North noticed some genuine breakthroughs recently. One Year 11 student who previously hesitated with VCE statistics questions has started working through past exam problems independently, showing strong problem-solving skills and taking real initiative after just a few sessions.

In another case, a Year 9 student who used to struggle with interpreting information from Venn diagrams was able to confidently explain her reasoning out loud and even picked up on her own mistakes using back-checking strategies.

Meanwhile, a primary school student now tackles word problems with much more confidence than before, completing all the set tasks without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Primary School.
