Listen to the students and understand what the actual issue is. More often than not it's not the concept itself but how the student is processing the concept, and if you don't see that you'll only be able to help them understand through repetition. My ability to tailor lessons to a students needs and study styles. I enjoy working with both…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster a deep understanding of the subject matter and to build the student's confidence in their own abilities. It's crucial to create a learning environment where students feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and explore different solutions. Personalizing lessons to…

A tutor’s role goes beyond just teaching concepts; it’s about building a student’s confidence and fostering a love for learning. The most important things a tutor can do are to be patient, provide clear explanations, and adapt teaching methods to suit the student’s learning style. From my experience helping my fellow batchmates, I have…

First thing which I can assure to all my students is that I'll make them understand the concepts clear so that they can remember and apply it forever in their life. Also I think a good teacher has to teach the subject from a student point of view, so that we can understand where they face problem in understanding the concept and help them to…

A tutor must teach the underlying concepts and "why things work" rather than just "how things work". A good tutor is much more than just a problem solver. Good tutor builds capability in students to actually use what they learnt to solve and analyze complex real world problems. Strong background and grasp of the subject in question. Currently a…

The most important thing a tutor can be is encouraging and patient, not everyone can grasp everything on their first run-through nor should they be expected to. I think it's best to work on problems with apt examples and explanations until the student is confident with the material and capable of working independently. Maintaining an encouraging…

Tutors should always be there to support their students and patiently relate to them. Tutors must be able to adjust how they communicate so students remain highly motivated to learn. I think tutors have to have the appropriate amount of empathy to understand, not only the way they learn, but also their reason for learning. Best thing tutor can do is align his values with his student's. I think this is a way to frustrate and alienate him. I can approach a problem the way student does. This gives me an insight into where they…

To really understand where the student is coming from. Help them to break down a problem and follow a methodical set of steps. A lot of science and mathematics subjects require a lot of practice and exposure to problems and questions. To promote interest and skills in the topic they are studying. They should also teach the student how to access and find knowledge that they may require. The most important thing i can do for a student is to be the students' friend not tutor. Inside Carlton NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Dylan worked through simplifying and calculating surds, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using homework examples.

For Year 10, Favour practised solving simultaneous equations and tackled linear graphs word problems.

Meanwhile, Queen (Year 10) focused on applying linear equations to solve worded questions involving real-life scenarios and reinforced her skills with extra practice from homework exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant less time reinforcing word problem strategies and missed chances to clarify errors.

In Year 10 algebra, skipping written working led to "small mistakes trying to solve in his head instead of using the paper."

For a senior student, messy or incomplete notes in calculus made back-checking difficult—one tutor observed, "she struggled recalling formulae under timed conditions because her notes were disorganized."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to explain steps aloud during fractions work; this avoidance made it harder to spot where confusion began.

Missed practice and incomplete written working often left gaps visible only at assessment time.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carlton North noticed some genuine breakthroughs recently. One Year 11 student who previously hesitated with VCE statistics questions has started working through past exam problems independently, showing strong problem-solving skills and taking real initiative after just a few sessions.

In another case, a Year 9 student who used to struggle with interpreting information from Venn diagrams was able to confidently explain her reasoning out loud and even picked up on her own mistakes using back-checking strategies.

Meanwhile, a primary school student now tackles word problems with much more confidence than before, completing all the set tasks without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Primary School.
