Be a person who they can come to when they need help. As we spend a big chunk of time together our student teacher relationship becomes stronger showing them to talk to their problems whether it may be social or academic. My communication because I lived in a boarding school for 5 years I was able to learn to effectively communicate with…

What is most important is to be able to cultivate self-confidence within the student when it comes to facing questions and tasks on their own; to let them believe they can face any challenge without fear or trepidation. Being able to get across difficult and abstract concepts in a way that is clear and easy to understand for the…

I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do is guide and support a student in their knowledge. For me, I found it the most helpful when a tutor was able to provide formulas or structures for solving problems, which allowed me to tackle whatever questions I was tasked me. As a student, I have a love of learning and an innate sense of…

A tutor MUST be able to explain concepts to students in very different ways that allow them to understand a difficult topic. Sometimes teachers at school cannot personally cater to students, so tutors should strive to explain things in a very eloquent, logical manner so that the student can follow. Ability to relate. I will not be "above" them,…

Whilst an understanding of the content is important, tutors should understand the way they present examples and what these examples include can stress students or cause them to have misconceptions. They should be willing to extend the understanding of students but understand the dangers of pushing a student "too hard." Personally I used to be…

The most important thing tutors can do for a student is to just be there for the student and give their students the motivation and encouragement to work, having a tutor myself those were the things that assisted me in achieving my scores. This kind of motivation and encouragement can then build into other parts of the student's life thus…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for the students is helping them improve their academics and achieve the highest goal in their ability. For example, once students feel doubting about the topic they have studied at school, the tutor should explain where the students have not understood and make sure to move on once they understand…

I believe that teachers/tutors make the greatest impact on a developing child or young adult's mind. Apart from the child's family, a teacher/tutor has the most influential face to face contact with a student, where it be as a mentor or as a friend. Hence, I strongly feel that tutors have the opportunity and responsibility to educate and develop a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is care about them. I believe that once you care about someone you work more towards their goals, helping them in any way that you can and even going out of your way to ensure they achieve their goals and are proud of the accomplishments they have achieved. If a tutor stops caring about their…

I think the most important job of a tutor is to help the student, not just in answering questions, but by giving them a fundamental understanding of the content that they would be able to reapply to many other questions, particularly ones that are curveballs. Apart from that, giving them the belief that they can do well if they just apply…

Encouragement and patience. Through personal experience, even if the student improve their score by 1% from their last test, this is enough of an encouragement for them to push harder and let them know you will be their for them anytime when they are stuck or needing help. The most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment in which the pupil feels encouraged to ask questions. Without a certain degree of security or familiarity, most kids are too nervous or shy to ask questions and thus are left with a minimalistic understanding of a topic, instead of the deeper understanding they could gain by…

It would be empathy, in my opinion. I am aware that there are intelligent people who are easily able to surpass me in knowledge, but I believe that to effectively teach and learn, one must have a sufficient level of empathy. I believe it's crucial for the instructor to first comprehend the student. As a former tutor, I am of the opinion that not every lesson is fully understood by students the first time around. The tutor must make sure to reiterate everything till the student is able to grasp it. As was previously mentioned, a tutor must be on time and patient with…

A good tutor should make sure that his/her student understands the essence and real life importance of the subject he/she is teaching. Nothing is stronger than a photographic memory, explaining things and concepts in a flow diagram or figure form will help students to retain more information. Inside Caulfield NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lily focused on **algebraic skills with indices and surds**, including practice questions from recent tests and tackling a challenging speed-time-distance problem.

For Year 10, James worked through test preparation and revision of trigonometry, applying both the **sine rule and cosine rule** to assignment questions involving bearings.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on VCE Chemistry concepts by answering past exam questions on **electrolysis, galvanic cells, and stoichiometry calculations using balanced chemical equations**.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students were impacted by disorganized or incomplete notes in mathematics, with a Year 12 student lacking a dedicated booklet for summarizing concepts—"needs a notes booklet for mathematics"—which left key formulae scattered and revision less effective.

Another senior student relied heavily on the CAS calculator during Section B but struggled with time management, resulting in rushed answers.

In Year 11 chemistry, missed homework on graph drawing meant less confidence handling practical data.

For a Year 8 algebra topic, one learner's messy working led to "missed sign errors," causing repeated mistakes when checking answers under timed conditions.

Recent Achievements

A Caulfield North tutor noticed a big change in one Year 11 student who started keeping a dedicated notes book and now proudly brings it to every session—before, he often forgot what he'd learned week to week.

Another high school student, after struggling with test nerves and silly mistakes, improved her test score to 80% by reviewing errors and using new exam strategies together.

In a younger year group, Lisa used to rush through work without checking details, but she's begun slowing down and double-checking her answers—last lesson she finished all her graph problems with no careless slips.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Caulfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Caulfield Junior College.
