Being more approachable and trying to match their level of understanding to find a better approach for studying is important. Every person is different and so is their understanding and learning level. Being able to match that level and teach them is the job of a tutor. I can be a good listener and am able to identify problems of students as I…

Teaching the content and helping them fully grasp it, rather than doing it for them. I find that a lot of subjects have a particular rhythm to them; although some require rote learning (like particular concepts, especially within math), there are always patterns that can be identified so that students achieve their very best. For example: Stage 2…

A bird learns to fly own its own.similarly the one important aspect in tutoring is that the students understand the basics and develop ideas of their own. Methods to solve a problem differ from person to person so a tutor can help them with the basics and methods. But at the end of the day the student must learn effectively.A successful tutor can do…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to: 1) Build strong, personal relationships with their students: a tutor should personalize the learning, make learning more interesting for the student, and teach to the student's strengths while minimizing their weaknesses. 2) Focus on goal setting, and creating benchmarks. I believe that in order for anyone to understand the material being taught - the tutor must begin with the fundamentals and basics; breaking down the information and then ensuring the student is able to explain it back is what I believe works best. This requires patience, which I believe is an essential quality a tutor must maintain in order for…

As a tutor the most we can do for is a student is to encourage them to not just learn what's in the book but also to understand the concepts with a greater depth. The other thing that tutor can do for a student to maximise their educational growth is to try and make them understand the points where they are wrong and not just to do their work for…

A tutor has to be patient and welcoming for their students. The reason these students come for tutoring is because they face difficulty keeping up with school. So they should be given the space to understand at their own pace, in their own method and a teacher needs to recognize that. We need to recognize the method which we choose to teach a…

I strongly believe in the idea behind the saying, teach a person how to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime. Give moral support and guidance. As a tutor, I don't give answers or solve the student's work, I want them to be able to solve it themselves and use their critical thinking skills with their knowledge of subject content. Tutors are expected to bolster student grades however this is not their true purpose, A tutor should help to develop students to not only achieve greater marks but also to have a greater understanding of the field they are being tutored in. This should extend beyond the tutoring time as the student develops the skills required to support…

A tutor needs to help identify a student's strong points and motivate the students in every possible way. It's not always the tutor that should be valued and respected but the students also needs the same respect and care. Also, a tutor should know how to boost up the morale of a student when he/she is feeling low. If student is facing some…

Inside CavanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Labiba revised the definitions and calculations for area and perimeter, then practiced applying these to various shapes using her school assignment.

In Year 10, Nathan tackled quadratic equations by solving them with the null factor law and explored further through a quadratics investigation task.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Anjali worked on differentiation from first principles and applied calculus techniques to questions involving tangent lines to curves.

Recent Challenges

During Year 11 Maths, Labiba's tendency to rush through calculations led to errors in number substitution despite knowing the correct method.

In a recent trigonometry session, skipping careful line-by-line working meant mistakes were repeated with surface area and unit conversions—time was lost re-checking calculator entries.

Meanwhile, Eliza (Year 8) often forgot prior concepts like prime numbers, requiring frequent review before new material could be tackled; as noted, this left "insufficient time to cover new topics for this term."

Isobel struggled to stay focused on decimal comparison tasks and needed reminders to follow instructions closely, which slowed progress during booklet work.

Recent Achievements

One Cavan tutor noticed Labiba now recalls geometric formulas directly and applies them to solve problems, whereas last session she needed more reminders; after learning how to handle composite shapes, she quickly broke down a tricky problem by herself.

In a high school session, a student who used to make frequent calculation errors in trigonometry now chooses the right formula independently and finishes homework ahead of time.

Another recent win came from Eliza (Year 6), who started asking questions openly rather than working quietly when stuck, and then solved all the decimal-fraction matches correctly during their number game.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mawson Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pooraka Primary School.
