I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to help the child grow and learn through assistance, rather than just providing the answers, as they need to understand what they are learning, and need to be able to develop the skills learned and apply them to their studies. The most important thing for a tutor is to help them become…

Teaching should be done flexibly, catering to each individuals as all students are different in their approach to learning and the time it takes to grasp each topics. I have also learnt that students often find themselves too afraid to ask questions and as a tutor I must be patient in ensuring that a student understands each questions before…

Make them interested in the content. The students won't want to learn unless they care about the content and while grades are good motivators, pure enjoyment and interest in a subject make it easier to learn. I can teach a varied range of subjects but can quickly adjust to each individual students needs. I try to find an approach that the student…

The most important thing is to be patient and to be a good listener - understanding that what may be easy to you might not be easy to the student, and to offer various techniques that will help the student's understanding. A tutor should also be honest, and should admit when they do not know a certain topic. This would help to build trust…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make them passionate about the subject. I wholeheartedly believe that a student must not cram information purely for grades, but to generate a genuine interest for the subject with the assistance of the tutor. I am very familiar with working with children from a large variety of ages. I…

To help them with any questions they have and identify their strengths and weaknesses in that subject to help develop and improve on it. The most important thing for a tutor to do is inspire self-believe and uncover topics that may become a passion for children. From this, tutors should foster a willingness to develop the child's skills and even potentially find a career path or tertiary education option within a specific area. Be approachable and pay attention. It's very hard to put your own worldview aside when it comes to knowledge, and many people are likely not even cognisant of that, but you need to understand that you know things that the child doesn't even know what they don't know. I make learning a bit more laid back and approachable. My strength is in relating…

Help them reach their full potential without doing all the work for them; I think it is important to let them do some hard work now and again so they can appreciate it more when they are congratulated for their success, and so that they are not 'coddled' into thinking other people will do all their work for them. Inside ChandlerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Olivia revised simple interest calculations for a maths assignment and practised applying the formula to different worded problems.

For Year 11, Marcus worked on matrix operations including addition, scalar multiplication, and identifying when multiplication is possible, as well as using matrices to solve simultaneous equations.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Sam focused on revising logarithmic and exponential equations—solving both algebraically and with worded population growth problems—and practised graph transformations of log and exponential functions with attention to domain and range.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, one student frequently rushed through questions without showing working, which led to repeated calculation errors; as noted, "needs to write his working out instead of solving questions in one go."

In Year 10 algebra sessions, confusion arose when isolating variables or deciding which method to use first—verbalising steps and drawing diagrams often clarified the path forward.

A senior student preparing for assessments sometimes arrived with incomplete materials and loose notes, making it harder to cross-check solutions or review feedback efficiently.

When writing reports in Year 11, disorganised sentence structure obscured mathematical reasoning and justification of methods used.

Recent Achievements

One Chandler tutor saw a Year 10 student move from confusion to confidence with simple interest after using real-life savings account examples; by the end of the session, he worked through several problems independently and even chose to add an extra weekly lesson.

A Year 11 student, who previously hesitated to ask questions, has started taking active notes and now attempts Venn diagram word problems on her own without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has begun completing multiplication tables up to 11x3 digits quickly—something that took much longer in earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Capalaba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gumdale State School.
