The most important thing you can do for a student as a tutor is to give them the space the communicate. I think that in learning anything, you need to have an understanding of where others are coming from to be able to identify where they differ. This relates to tutoring because if there is a misunderstanding in a topic, I can identify where this…

I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

First and foremost, giving them respect in the way they're spoken to as well as being taught. If a student is feeling intimidated with the syllabus, it is a tutor's duty to instill confidence by being approachable and attentive at all times. Secondly, a good tutor knows scheduling classes in a fun and interactive manner so that the students…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to impart the learnings you have acquired through your previous schooling and to show the tutee how it will be applied in real life. In my opinion, there are at least two things that a tutor can give some help for a student: 1.it is necessary for a tutor to teach students correctly, answer student's questions and response to student's enquires clearly and friendly. 2.It is important for a tutor to help students to figure out what is the most effective way of learning for…

Approach tutoring with an open mind. Some students can easily grasp the concepts while the others it may take time or a special approach for them to understand.Making the student feel comfortable is very important to allow them to express themselves and feel free to ask if they don't understand. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make them feel comfortable and create a positive environment. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure a student can fully understand topics that have previously been difficult. I do not think it is not enough for a tutor to simply talk through the topic with the student and expect them to understand it. The most important thing that a tutor can provide for a student is support and motivation. When a student is struggling, they have low self-efficacy and motivation to engage with the subject. Washim was absolutely fantastic with our daughter Josephine! He was very patient and knowledgeable. Josephine went from a C student in Semester 1 to an A student in Semester 2 last year. The only variable that changed was tutoring with Washim during that period of time.

Inside Chapel HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Alex worked on division skills, converting fractions to decimals, and applying the order of operations through targeted practice.

In Year 8, Jamie focused on consolidating index laws—covering multiplication and division of indices—and practiced calculations with negative integers, reinforcing sign rules.

For Year 10, Sam reviewed simple and compound interest problems and revisited last year's finance topics for consolidation ahead of upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

Alex does rush through some of his multiplication which causes wrong answers.

In Year 8 algebra, a student struggled to break complex problems into manageable steps without support, making equation manipulation harder than necessary.

For a Year 11 student, forgetting to bring notes and not recapping past topics meant essential area formulas were inconsistently recalled during lessons.

A different senior student lost focus midway through multi-step problems and found it hard to re-engage, particularly when revising for exams in measurement and linear equations.

Recent Achievements

A Chapel Hill tutor noticed Lizzie, a Year 10 student, moving from hesitation with linear equations to tackling most questions independently after just a brief explanation.

In a recent high school session, Felix demonstrated genuine progress by recalling Pythagoras' Theorem accurately without prompts—something he'd previously needed reminders for—and even welcomed exam feedback, openly discussing areas he found tricky rather than brushing them aside.

Meanwhile, Alex in Year 7 has started breaking down word problems independently, showing much more independence than earlier in the term when he would wait for guidance before attempting new challenges.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kenmore Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chapel Hill State School.
