As a tutor, the most valuable thing we can do is to inspire our student to be more confident in their abilities. We must help students build their own critical thinking and problem solving skills for their long-term success. I believe fostering an encouraging space that prioritizes learning over being right or wrong is best for this. My strength…

Not just tutor them, but be a friend. By opening up and developing a closer bond to students, the students feel more comfortable and it doesn't become a tutoring session, but just a study session. I went through the course(s) myself quite recently, so I understand what's expected on the students, and what they need to do to excel and not only get…

Firstly, I believe the philosophy of "Teaching to fish rather than giving a fish. " It suggests that the tutor has a responsibility to inspire her students to take further exploration in the subject and cultivate good learning habits. Secondly, I think encouragement is essential in tutoring. Being as a tutor, I would let my student know that they…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for their students is to help them achieve the result they want whilst not being restricted to long and tedious hours of studying, maintaining a study life balance. I think my greatest strengths as a tutor is the ability to warm up to students in a comfortable and calming way, due to my experience…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is patience and keep great confident about your students, since sometime when they cannot understand the course materials very quickly, the tutors cannot rush them or blame them or being negative. Keep great confident for your students, trust them, and go over the materials more…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them to understand that the concepts and techniques they are learning are much less frightening and overwhelming when they are boiled down and simplified into manageable components. When tackling a problem, the more aspects we don't understand, the more likely we are to panic and deem…

Support them. Sometimes students just need that boost of confidence and support to understand. Frustration in their own learning can often end up being the reason why a concept is not being understood. It is always for me to put their thoughts first and give them the importance. It is simply how a student learn and grow. A little bit of channeling of concepts, guidance and being there as a support is what makes it work. It is all about concepts how well you know them and how easy you can make them for students to understand. I always try to…

So far I have found several factors that make for good tutors. Firstly building a strong and personal relationship with the student is very important as the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor can add essential ingredients for students to learn and grow. Secondly, communication and collaboration with the student,…

Listen to them. Education is a big system where getting your voice heard feels impossible, a tutor is the best thing the students have if they need to talk about it - even if that's just you agreeing that the resources they were given weren't enough and that it's understandable that they're stuck. I have a good record of teaching people flagged as…

I believe that the most effective way to increase academic score/grade is to find the weakness/ topics that we do not quite get. I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. Washim was absolutely fantastic with our daughter Josephine! He was very patient and knowledgeable. Josephine went from a C student in Semester 1 to an A student in Semester 2 last year. The only variable that changed was tutoring with Washim during that period of time.

Inside Chapel HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Alex worked on division skills, converting fractions to decimals, and applying the order of operations through targeted practice.

In Year 8, Jamie focused on consolidating index laws—covering multiplication and division of indices—and practiced calculations with negative integers, reinforcing sign rules.

For Year 10, Sam reviewed simple and compound interest problems and revisited last year's finance topics for consolidation ahead of upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

Alex does rush through some of his multiplication which causes wrong answers.

In Year 8 algebra, a student struggled to break complex problems into manageable steps without support, making equation manipulation harder than necessary.

For a Year 11 student, forgetting to bring notes and not recapping past topics meant essential area formulas were inconsistently recalled during lessons.

A different senior student lost focus midway through multi-step problems and found it hard to re-engage, particularly when revising for exams in measurement and linear equations.

Recent Achievements

A Chapel Hill tutor noticed Lizzie, a Year 10 student, moving from hesitation with linear equations to tackling most questions independently after just a brief explanation.

In a recent high school session, Felix demonstrated genuine progress by recalling Pythagoras' Theorem accurately without prompts—something he'd previously needed reminders for—and even welcomed exam feedback, openly discussing areas he found tricky rather than brushing them aside.

Meanwhile, Alex in Year 7 has started breaking down word problems independently, showing much more independence than earlier in the term when he would wait for guidance before attempting new challenges.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kenmore Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chapel Hill State School.
