I believe all educators need to be able to connect with students. My experience is that being able to build bonds of trust and goodwill goes a long way in opening students up to what you're teaching, as well as facilitating a comfortable environment where students not only learn, but enjoy doing so. I believe my past experience in education is my…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

As a tutor you need to provide the individual with problem solving skills to allow them to recognise when a situation is difficult and ways in which they can go about the problem or situation in an effective way to gain insight. This relates to when the child may have a difficult problem for which they can break things down into smaller more…

As a tutor cannot take exams or do homework for the student, the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to have faith in the student's ability and assist the student in every way possible to ensure that the student has faith in their own ability to achieve their goals. Patience, passion and empathy. Patience as it takes time to…

Tutoring can be challenging, especially when it comes to motivating your learner. You see the potential they have, and they often hear about the potential they have, but they do not feel as though they got what it takes. Living in such a busy and demanding time can often make us feel the time constraints on everything we do and we expect our…

I believe as a tutor, the most important thing is to pass on crucial skills. Tutoring lessons involve not only achieving the best academic results but also learn crucial skills that can be applied by the student in many aspects. I believe effective and open communication is a strength for me as a tutor. I can understand the needs of the student…

Using a tailored learning program for all abilities and expectations, and an unfailing growth mindset, a tutor should provide students with a love of learning that leads to internal fulfillment and a virtuous cycle where concepts are pursued willingly, and thus, more thoroughly. However, a tutor is not only a teacher, but a mentor; they should…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their confidence and skills to be able to problem solve independently. A tutor should be able to explain concepts in a manner which allows students to understand the concepts and apply it elsewhere. A tutor should assist students in understanding concepts on a deeper level, rather than just rote learning. Furthermore, a tutor should be passionate in what they teach. A teacher that is passionate about subjects will…

Facilitate the student's own learning by equipping them with the tools to then seek out how to learn and solve problems, and allowing the student to go where they want to go. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student in my opinion is to give them guidance on how to be successful in the subject we tutor. At the end of the day we only see them once or twice a week. We can't teach them everything. So it is important that we guide them on how to learn and study in order to be successful. Myt strength lies…

I think it's a question of what a tutor can BE rather than do. I found in my experience that I always responded to teachers who were enthusiastic and portrayed a genuine care for the learning of the student. In a metaphorical sense, the tutor must think like a student in an empathetic way rather than merely be a one way stream of instruction. If a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and personable with the student. Tutors are understanding and can target specific difficulties in a student's learning. We also not only identify…

Inside ChiswickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Rose practiced column multiplication with two- and three-digit numbers, then began exploring long division and the difference between volume and capacity using real-world examples.

In Year 9, Lachlan worked through algebra introduction topics including solving equations from a self-chosen booklet, alongside converting between 12- and 24-hour time formats.

For Year 11, Sophie focused on surface area and composite shapes before tackling past exam questions on financial mathematics and error in measurement to consolidate her understanding ahead of assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5 English, one student hesitated to distinguish between explanation and evidence when reading a challenging text, leading to slower comprehension and more time spent clarifying instructions.

A Year 11 Standard Maths student repeatedly left revision work incomplete—"he missed this content back in term 1 and it's now the start of term 3"—which meant foundational algebra gaps lingered into exam prep.

Another senior student often crammed working onto one page without clear steps, making it harder to trace errors or benefit from tutor feedback during complex geometry questions. In these moments, opportunities for understanding were lost amid scattered notes or half-finished attempts.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Chiswick recently noticed some encouraging shifts across different year levels. One high school student, after previously relying heavily on set rules for each maths topic, began to tackle unfamiliar problems independently by piecing together concepts himself—something he'd hesitated to do before.

Another older student who used to avoid asking questions is now actively seeking clarification during sessions, making sure he understands each step rather than just nodding along.

In a primary session, a younger learner who often rushed through addition has started double-checking her answers independently and was able to catch and fix her own mistakes in the latest speed test.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Abbotsford Public School.
