I believe a tutor plays a crucial role in molding a student's academic journey, aside from their time spent at school. It is imperative to build a good working relationship with the student, which will aid the student in being comfortable and clarifying all doubts. This is important because I have met many students who are under the assumption…

Academically, I want to be able to build a student's confidence in their mastery of the subject, and familiarize the students with questions that may come up in an exam. This is done as I'll get to know the student and create a positive, engaging study atmosphere during the session. Non-academically, I want to help students make studying and their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ignite a passion and 'vision' for learning. Our current society tends to view academia as a means to an end as opposed to an ends in itself, and if a tutor awakens a love for the subject in his student, then they have succeeded. By doing so, the student becomes more engaged and receptive…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is listen to and understand their goals as an individual person and then try their best to help them reach and exceed their academic goals. It is important to be able to break down concepts into an individualised way that caters to an individual so that the student is able to…

For the majority of students I have met, a large proportion approach their studies disinterested. Thus, the tutor’s most crucial responsibility is not only to effectively convey the subject matter, it is to do it in a way which sparks engagement. This extends further for theoretical subjects such as chemistry, where the tutor assumes a greater…

I believe that a tutor must be flexible and patient, as all students' needs are different. They have to be persistent and encouraging, and make sure that any success is emphasised and also improved upon. The tutor should not only help the student to understand their coursework, but also help them to implement their own study plans and methods, so…

Being willing to help, but also acknowledge the rare instances where a tutor may be unable to help to a confident level. I believe it is better to acknowledge if you do not know something rather than pretend you do and risk teaching something that is incorrect. When this problem is encountered, however, it is up to the tutor to rectify this by…

Equip them with the ability to eventually solve problems independently. At the end of the day, the role of tutoring is to help students foster independent thinking so they can overcome academic challenges on their own, because being self-sufficient is important. Apart from teaching, I think a personal tutor has the ability to identify the student's strength and weaknesses and advice them on how they can use their strengths for their advantage. And a tutor should always follow the student's pace which will hep them to understand the concepts better. In addition a tutor can always provide study tips. I…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is figure out their learning method, whether that be through visuals, making the learning content into a story or explaining the concept to themselves. That would enable the tutor to teach in a way that the student understands and can remember the content taught. Furthermore, building a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only explain an answer to a student, but actually make sure that they understand how the answer is derived and can do it themselves. There is no point in rote learning something when you can understand how an answer comes to be. As Albert Einstein said, 'Education is not the learning of…

I think a tutor must be understanding and helpful. Finding innovative ways to teach and repeat the same concept. If the teacher teaches the student something and I as the tutor say the same thing, there is no understanding that would be gained. It is important to understand exactly what the student is not clear or sure about and clear those doubts…

A tutor is not just someone whose only job is to formally teach a student. A student needs a true mentor and guide just as much as he needs a teacher. This is where an actual tutor's true responsibility comes to play. As someone who was in a high school student very recently, I am well aware of the problems students actually face. Whether it…

Inside ClaytonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lucy worked through surface area and volume calculations in measurement, followed by trigonometry basics using visual aids.

For Year 10, Daniel focused on mastering linear equations and interpreting univariate data sets, with practice constructing and analysing graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on bivariate data analysis and time series interpretation, applying these skills to real-world scenarios in her textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, a student left notes at school and relied on scattered digital files during finance revision; as the tutor observed, "he was flipping through pages to find a particular formula," which slowed progress and caused confusion with recurrence relations.

For VCE Maths Methods, another student frequently entered incorrect data into the CAS calculator or forgot to bring it home for practice, leading to incomplete preparation for graphing tasks.

Meanwhile, in Year 3 English, unclear punctuation and skipping question instructions—such as colouring more items than asked—created repeated misunderstandings mid-lesson that disrupted focus and accuracy.

Recent Achievements

One Clayton tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who now takes the lead in making clear, simplified notes during sessions—something he rarely attempted before—which has helped him remember key trigonometry tips from previous lessons.

In a senior session, another student tackled her Statistics test with noticeably more confidence, scoring 86 after consistently struggling on earlier assessments and using her calculator skills much more independently this time.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised his tutor by speaking up to ask for extra explanations about converting length units, rather than waiting passively as he had done at first.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peter's School.
