A tutor typically works 1-on-1, therefor it's important to treat each student as an individual and figure out what style of learning works best for them. A tutor should collaborate with the student to help them reach academic heights that they would not be able to with regular schooling alone. I am positive, encouraging, but also thorough. I am…

It is significant for a tutor to promote independence and to encourage effective learning. Tutors are required to encourage their students to have a voice in the sessions, ask questions, offer textual interpretations that are beyond the expected, and participate actively in all conversations regardless of their level of confidence. It is crucial…

I believe that letting a student know that I care for her/him is essential to earn her/his trust and full attention. As a tutor, I will also make sure to plan my approach in a way that will best fit a specific student because every child is different and they have different needs. I, myself, love studying and I will try my best to pass that…

Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. Being understanding, confident and respectful are key aspects in a tutor- student relationship. These three qualities ensure the reliability and integrity of the tutor. I also believe that showing my students I'm not always right is a good skill to teach (mostly these mistakes are unintentional). It is the manner in which one amends one's mistakes…

Ask the student any questions they have. Provide notes/examples step by step so that the student can learn and ask any questions about why that is so. Always be there to support the…

Believing in the students is the most important thing a tutor can do for their student. Other than academics, I believe a tutor can also help build a student's social and behavioral skills, as they spent a large amount of time exercising their brain which can help apply to out-of-studies situations as well. I also believe tutors model a different way of thinking of things, outside of the traditional school-based curriculum there are…

Inside Cranbourne EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Arman focused on improving multiplication using box and lattice methods, then revisited addition and subtraction skills through targeted worksheets.

In Year 8, Mahima tackled simultaneous equations by learning both the substitution and elimination methods, alongside expanding and factorising algebraic expressions.

For Year 10, Jessica concentrated on drawing linear graphs by calculating gradients and intercepts, as well as applying index laws for multiplying and dividing indices with like bases.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, messy or unclear written calculations led to confusion, especially when simplifying algebraic expressions—one tutor observed, "She needs to fix some of her maths layout, primarily on how she sets out her calculations."

A Year 10 student hesitated to ask for help with difficult worded problems and spent too long worrying about unfamiliar concepts, which slowed progress.

In senior years, a lack of double-checking persisted in probability and indices work; mistakes often went unnoticed because answers weren't reviewed.

When homework was incomplete in Year 7 algebra tasks, earlier gaps in times tables knowledge remained unaddressed.

Recent Achievements

One Cranbourne East tutoring session saw a Year 10 student finally stop needing the tutor's approval after every algebra step; she now checks her own work and only asks for feedback at the end, a big change from before when she needed reassurance throughout.

A high schooler who used to get stuck on index laws now completes homework independently and has improved her maths layout significantly.

In Year 5, one student who was hesitant about long division is starting to write out each step methodically, even converting remainders into fractions—a habit he hadn't tried before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cranbourne Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cranbourne East Primary School.
