I believe a tutor is there to support the student, to clarify any doubts that the student may have, but also inspire them to learn more and expand their knowledge. As a tutor I can provide the students with not only support in their school homework, but also provide other resources like worksheets or suggest websites where they can practice their…

I believe that a safe and welcoming learning environment is more important as it ensures a student will get the most out of their learning experience. If there is an environment which welcomes questions and challenging areas which an individual may be less comfortable with, it can assist one with reaching their full potential and making learning…

Keeping this at the forefront of lessons together will also promote important qualities such as patience and good listening skills that allow your student to feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express concerns or make mistakes. This also helps tutors…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to create a comfortable, non-judgmental environment where students feel safe to ask questions without fear of feeling “stupid†and to support them at their individual level. By meeting students where they are and encouraging progress at their own pace, tutors can build confidence, foster…

A tutor’s main role is to help a student understand and build confidence in what they’re learning. This means being patient, providing clear explanations, and offering encouragement when things get tough. It’s also important to identify the student’s or learners strengths and weaknesses so we can focus on what really matters for their…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for the student is guide them and encourage them. I think my strengths as a tutor is my patience and communication. Encourage them to ask questions. The more questions a student can ask their tutors, the better they will be able to learn. By asking questions, they can understand why something is the way it is and not simply memorising the concept. This way they understand the concept and not remembering it. I can explain things well. With my instructions, I…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them confidence. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to avoid having a 'one-size fits all' explanation. Having different explanations and different examples assists in building a greater understanding of the topic and therefore leads to better results for the students. I believe that my strength as a tutor would be my ability to adapt to different…

Inside Cranbourne EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Arman focused on improving multiplication using box and lattice methods, then revisited addition and subtraction skills through targeted worksheets.

In Year 8, Mahima tackled simultaneous equations by learning both the substitution and elimination methods, alongside expanding and factorising algebraic expressions.

For Year 10, Jessica concentrated on drawing linear graphs by calculating gradients and intercepts, as well as applying index laws for multiplying and dividing indices with like bases.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, messy or unclear written calculations led to confusion, especially when simplifying algebraic expressions—one tutor observed, "She needs to fix some of her maths layout, primarily on how she sets out her calculations."

A Year 10 student hesitated to ask for help with difficult worded problems and spent too long worrying about unfamiliar concepts, which slowed progress.

In senior years, a lack of double-checking persisted in probability and indices work; mistakes often went unnoticed because answers weren't reviewed.

When homework was incomplete in Year 7 algebra tasks, earlier gaps in times tables knowledge remained unaddressed.

Recent Achievements

One Cranbourne East tutoring session saw a Year 10 student finally stop needing the tutor's approval after every algebra step; she now checks her own work and only asks for feedback at the end, a big change from before when she needed reassurance throughout.

A high schooler who used to get stuck on index laws now completes homework independently and has improved her maths layout significantly.

In Year 5, one student who was hesitant about long division is starting to write out each step methodically, even converting remainders into fractions—a habit he hadn't tried before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cranbourne Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cranbourne East Primary School.
