This is critical during examination season where it tests the ability of students, with enough practice and making sure that students understands key concepts through tests and questions prepares the students in advance for a test. Helping children realise their full potential. It's important to turn negatives into positives for example, praising a child and making sure they know they have improved. Communication is also very important. As I am a teacher, I know that differentiated strategies are the way to teach. Differentiated instruction based on individual needs is…

The most important thing to me is creating the networks for students to think for and teach themselves whenever our time is up. It's the classic saying, "give a man a fish he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll eat for his whole life". A tutor should, like any good teacher, provide the student with the tools to critically evaluate…

Empathy is key. If a tutor can show how learning certain topics can help a student in the future, it keeps the student's interest held in the subject for longer. What really helps is to periodically give some positive feedback to the student about their progress - how he or she has improved in the past 3 months, or month, for example. Because of…

Teach obviously! but i think if the tutor can make the lessons as fun as possible so that the student looks forward to them as something enjoyable rather than as purely work, the best results will occur. I am an excellent communicator and can teach via example quite effectively in almost any subject. I am easily able to match my communication…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to not give all the answers or talk about specific or complicated concepts for an extended period of time, but instead, find how the student learns best and teach this way. Listening, understanding and providing constructive feedback further can additionally help both parties in learning.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their confidence and skills to be able to problem solve independently. I think having a positive relationship with the student is really important, in order to ensure there is mutual trust and understanding between student and tutor. The student understands that you want the best for them and in turn will try their best with you. In order to establish this, it is important to understand the pupil's likes, dislikes,…

A tutor's most important role is to build a students confidence while helping them develop a deep understanding of the material. Additionally, creating a supportive and motivating environment fosters curiosity and a love for learning. I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build trust, encourage genuine confidence, and teach students how to learn independently. It's not just about helping them get through one subject or assignment, it's about giving them the skills and self-belief they can carry with them into everything else they do. I think my main strengths…

Finding other ways of working out a problem. If something has been said and isn’t ‘going in’ we can try a visual approach or written down approach, whatever works for the student . Being patient I think is very important, not getting frustrated with the student and using positive language, for example ‘good try’ or ‘nearly there’.…

I believe the most important thing about a tutor is being able to provide self-confidence for the student. Encourage them to pursue their dreams. Teach them to be lifelong learners. I believe you have completely understood the concept when you can simplify it entirely. So, the student should totally grasp the concepts at hand. A tutor can help the student realize their passions, and help them achieve it. Making the students interested in the subject by…

Inside CremorneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Charlotte focused on units of measurement by converting between millimetres, centimetres, metres, and kilometres, and explored the difference between volume and area for various 3D shapes.

For Year 8, Olivia worked through algebraic equations involving bracket expansion and practiced simplifying expressions with numbers in the denominator.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ben tackled solving linear equations for x—including questions that involved combining like terms—and practiced working with inequalities on number lines, including remembering to flip the sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5, one student was hesitant to attempt Olympiad questions independently, waiting for guidance instead of trying strategies alone; as a tutor observed, "she didn't know where to start and needed prompting before attempting solutions."

In Year 7 algebra, another avoided writing out full working, which led to missed negatives in multi-step equations.

A Year 10 student struggled with organization—falling behind on homework meant less class time could be spent tackling new or challenging problems.

During Year 12 revision, incomplete notes made it difficult to review exam topics efficiently, so critical feedback from marked tasks wasn't always taken up in future work.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Cremorne noticed that one high school student, Sienna, who previously struggled with negative numbers, now confidently solves equations involving both positive and negative values and can explain the reasoning behind each rule—a big step from needing constant guidance.

In another session, Stephanie began asking for clarification when creative writing tasks felt unclear rather than staying silent or guessing; she's also started trying new writing approaches on her own initiative.

Meanwhile, Year 3 student Theo made a shift from guessing coin combinations to methodically working out dollar and cent problems by himself—he finished his lesson accurately combining complex amounts without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mosman Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like SCECGS Redlands - Murdoch campus.
