This is critical during examination season where it tests the ability of students, with enough practice and making sure that students understands key concepts through tests and questions prepares the students in advance for a test. The most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence in a student's learning. Great confidence leads to greater success in all areas of life and facilitates more comfortability to accept further learning. My strength as a tutor is I recognize that all individuals learn differently and have different styles of retaining information. Hence, I…

Motivation and confidence are two key elements of student success, if I can support them in achieving a sense of self-efficacy regarding these elements, they are bound to see improvement. Students often know where they fall short in their work, they just need motivation to improve those areas. Once they know that they can achieve this themselves,…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to not give all the answers or talk about specific or complicated concepts for an extended period of time, but instead, find how the student learns best and teach this way. Listening, understanding and providing constructive feedback further can additionally help both parties in learning.…

Helping children realise their full potential. It's important to turn negatives into positives for example, praising a child and making sure they know they have improved. Communication is also very important. As I am a teacher, I know that differentiated strategies are the way to teach. Differentiated instruction based on individual needs is…

Empathy is key. If a tutor can show how learning certain topics can help a student in the future, it keeps the student's interest held in the subject for longer. What really helps is to periodically give some positive feedback to the student about their progress - how he or she has improved in the past 3 months, or month, for example. Because of…

The most important thing to me is creating the networks for students to think for and teach themselves whenever our time is up. It's the classic saying, "give a man a fish he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll eat for his whole life". A tutor should, like any good teacher, provide the student with the tools to critically evaluate…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their confidence and skills to be able to problem solve independently. Teach obviously! but i think if the tutor can make the lessons as fun as possible so that the student looks forward to them as something enjoyable rather than as purely work, the best results will occur. I am an excellent communicator and can teach via example quite effectively in almost any subject. I am easily able to match my communication…

I think having a positive relationship with the student is really important, in order to ensure there is mutual trust and understanding between student and tutor. The student understands that you want the best for them and in turn will try their best with you. In order to establish this, it is important to understand the pupil's likes, dislikes,…

Finding other ways of working out a problem. If something has been said and isn’t ‘going in’ we can try a visual approach or written down approach, whatever works for the student . Being patient I think is very important, not getting frustrated with the student and using positive language, for example ‘good try’ or ‘nearly there’.…

I believe the most important thing about a tutor is being able to provide self-confidence for the student. Inside Cremorne PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Xander focused on trigonometric ratios and reviewing concepts from his recent maths exam to reinforce understanding of key topics.

In Year 7, Soraya worked through past paper questions covering algebraic factorisation and quadratic equations, with an emphasis on both the quadratic formula and completing the square.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student practiced rounding numbers as well as using visual aids to understand fractions, building confidence in core numeracy skills.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, Charlie needed to look back at notes often for trigonometric ratios and equations not provided in exams—this slowed her down during problem-solving and risked gaps if resources weren't available.

In a Year 10 session, one student hesitated with algebraic problem solving, "deferring instead to decimals" when unsure, which meant missed opportunities to build confidence with unfamiliar techniques.

A Year 7 student sometimes left homework incomplete or prioritized easier addition problems over those involving carrying; as noted, "she completed long addition questions that did not need carrying." This led to less practice with the challenging skills required for tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Cremorne Point noticed Charlie, a high school student, now tackles past exam papers almost entirely on his own—he used to rely on his notes but recently completed a whole paper independently and highlighted key points for revision.

Soraya, also in high school, demonstrated a big shift by not just solving area questions quickly but explaining her reasoning aloud without prompting; previously she hesitated to share her thought process.

In primary, Xander struggled with number sentences last week but this time answered every one correctly after extra practice, showing real improvement in accuracy and self-correction.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Loreto Kirribilli.
