The most important thing is to build confidence of the student in their learning, and making them believe that they can do it without giving them pressure or distinguishing one from another for their abilities. It is also important for the tutor to create a comfortable learning environment where they don’t feel embarrassed making mistakes but…

I believe explaining a concept in such a way that the student understands it intuitively and can thus use that understanding to solve different problems, rather than simply rote-learning a series of facts, is an incredibly important part of being a tutor. The tutor should be adding to a student's toolkit such that they can solve a variety of…

I think that this does vary student to student (haha sorry bit of an off question-answer!) But largely and for those that are shy it's being approachable and this means anything the student doesn't understand, the student should be eager to ask you if you are approachable. And for those who aren't so shy and often at a higher level too, my answer…

The most important things I can do for a student is to come prepared and organised to lessons. Making the most of my time with the student is essential to help the student gain the most advantage from tutoring. In high school some of the tutors I had made lessons very boring and awkward hence why I also ensure lessons are fun and safe for my…

As i was mentoring students at Curtin i got to realise that being a form of support not only academically but also forming a relationship with the student is the most important thing a tutor can do. I am patient and willing to give my all in order to help my students become the best version of themselves. I am able to relate to students and…

I think the most important things for a tutor is to make sure the student knows how there education will be valuable for adulthood. I think I am reliable,…

The first thing would be to establish a plan of goals and expectations and help the student identify their role in this plan. Once a tutor has an idea of the expectation of the parents/school/ students then only can progress take shape, and this might have many forms and variations as to how this is executed as the student grows or stalls. So,…

Although it is highly important that a tutor teaches their students the material covered in the syllabus, it is equally as important that the tutor teaches their students the tools required to succeed in a competitive academic environment. 1. Provide personalized support: A tutor should tailor their teaching methods to suit the individual needs and learning style of each student. This may involve identifying areas of weakness, adapting lesson plans, and providing additional resources to help the student succeed. 2. Build confidence: A tutor should help boost a student's…

Amidst the competitive pressure of institutions on this generation's children, one of the vital things a tutor can do for a fellow student is to provide a safe space for them to be able to express themselves, i.e allowing them to ask questions and understand the weaknesses of their students. That way they will be enthusiastic to learn from their…

I think the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach him different things while motivating the student and making sure he/she/they understand the essence of the teaching so that they can apply it in daily life rather than asking them to memorize different things. This way the students not only get good grades but also store whatever…

Illustrating the solution, explaining with the right examples, respecting everyone's views and value every question however simple it maybe. Making the discourse interesting and interactive. Inside DalkeithTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Phoebe worked on mastering organic chemistry concepts like using the periodic table to draw molecules and distinguish between polar and non-polar substances, as well as refining scientific writing skills for her assignment by focusing on terminology, referencing, and grammar.

Another Year 11 student completed revision in biology for an upcoming test and then shifted to practicing vectors, covering vector operations and applications.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student consolidated understanding of linear equations and their graphs using practice questions, also revisiting probability and statistics topics in preparation for assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student working on financial mathematics was encouraged to "try do his own findings on loans," highlighting a need for greater independence in researching and applying concepts beyond guided lessons.

In Year 10, one tutor noted, "he does most of his problem solving mentally," which meant key algebraic steps were left unwritten—making errors harder to spot or correct.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student still made small calculation mistakes when she didn't line up numbers carefully during addition and subtraction; messy layout slowed her progress and increased confusion during worded problems.

Recent Achievements

One Dalkeith tutoring session saw a high school student, Cooper, move from struggling with interest calculations to confidently working through problems on his own after some targeted practice.

In another case, Phoebe (Year 11 Chemistry) started out unsure where her knowledge gaps were, but she independently identified what needed revisiting and even adopted new study habits like reading aloud—something she hadn't tried before.

Meanwhile, Tilly in Year 4 had been hesitant with times tables, but now answers questions for the 4s and 7s quickly even when asked in random order.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dalkeith Primary School.
