I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to help them truly understand the material, build their confidence, and make learning enjoyable. It is about explaining concepts in a way that makes sense to them, encouraging them when they are struggling, and finding ways to keep them engaged and interested. A good tutor helps…

Ultimately, a tutor should aim to foster independence in students, empowering them to become self-directed learners who can take ownership of their education beyond the tutoring sessions. This includes teaching study skills, time management, and organizational strategies that can help students become more independent and successful learners. I can…

Apart from delivering a sound understanding of the concepts to the student, I aim to reinforce my tutoring with study strategies so they can advance their independent learning and boost their way to success. Being a tutor, I want to see my student gain confidence in their subjects and learn not just the knowledge from me, but the leaning…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity, build confidence, and foster a love for learning. First, a tutor should simplify complex concepts and explain them in ways that make sense to the student. It’s about making the subject less intimidating and more approachable. Second, building the…

Help them with their growth as an overall human being, not just a student. This can be done by personally connecting with the student, not becoming just their teacher but someone they can talk to and rely on. I have a very deep understanding of what it takes to succeed in a subject. I know how to study for it, and what knowledge is required to…

I acknowledge that passing on knowledge such as how to use Pythagoras is important, I would love to inspire students to love learning and being creative in the way that approaches a math issue. When students grow up, it is not the quadratic equations or math problems that helps them to thrive in higher education and life, but it is the ability to…

Since this is a 1-on-1 tutorial, the tutor must give full attention to the student. Also to find ways to make sessions enjoyable but not to the point of sacrificing the time for teaching. And again to be patient so that the student can fully understand the topics being discussed. My best quality as a tutor would be my patience. I know a lot of…

Just supporting them through questions and providing hints allowing them to figure out the problem by themselves. Because the time spent is so limited homework is essential in order to consolidate the work done in class. I think as much as it has to do with academics, it has a lot to do with mental health and the overall well-being of the student, too. They don't necessarily have to tell a tutor anything; they just need to know that this is someone they could potentially confide in. This also helps boost academic progress. And for a more technical aspect of…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to create a judgement-free environment where a student feels confident asking for help. Rather than simply reteaching content they're already learning at school, I concentrate on identifying and targeting weaknesses to support long-term improvement. Study the student and know his or her pros and cons. I would say master the pros whilst teaching the pros. Divide the activities and show the student that learning isn't a burden its much of a relief at the end of the day because goals can be reached easier once you know better. Not only unraveling inquiries on schoolwork, I believe it is important for them to understand the concepts behind a text or maths questions, such as correlated themes of a text. By offering a new perspective to students, a tutor does need a high level of patience to answer further questions. A tutor should also give honest feedback and encourage…

Inside DandenongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ayaan worked on adding and comparing decimals, then moved to a practice test focused on basic algebraic expressions.

Year 8 student Zara tackled statistics by finding mean, median, mode, and range using real data sets, followed by interpreting stem-and-leaf plots.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Michael prepared for an upcoming algebra assessment by creating linear equations from graphs and exploring intercepts through targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework, which limited their grasp of recent algebra content—"needs to work on completing homework assigned by tutor to be able to get a better grasp of knowledge."

In Year 11, time management in assessments was a challenge; extra minutes were spent searching through notes instead of solving problems directly.

One Year 7 learner hesitated when facing multi-step worded questions, sometimes pausing midway and doubting their approach despite knowing the method.

When asked to show working for area calculations, another student initially struggled but responded after prompting, showing the impact that process habits have on confidence during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Dandenong tutor noticed Haylee, a high school student, has started writing her own notes more effectively and now uses them when tackling test questions—something she hesitated to do before.

In another session, Elma (also in high school) was able to work through most practice test problems independently after previously needing regular prompting.

Meanwhile, Amelia from Year 7 remembered how to convert units accurately for the first time without hints, having struggled with this step earlier in the term.

Last week, Haylee finished an entire worksheet applying new techniques on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dandenong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dandenong Primary School.
