One of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is listen. I have seen in my experience that sometimes students have unsolved doubts because their class teacher or tutor does not properly listen to them and fail to comprehend these queries. Anybody can be knowledgable on any topic or chapter but what really helps a student is if…

I believe that the most important responsibility of a tutor is to inspire curiosity and passion for study among students. This can be done by making lessons much more interactive and fascinating, which will encourage them to study for themselves, not for the sake of someone else. Also, tutors should create an environment where students feel…

It is not just about the concepts but also their practical implications and applications. In my view I have always been a good teacher to my students. Help them with their growth as an overall human being, not just a student. This can be done by personally connecting with the student, not becoming just their teacher but someone they can talk to and rely on. I think the most important aspect as a tutor is to listen to the student and foster independence. The most important thing a tutor can do is be there for the student. Unlike a teacher, the tutor has the luxury of being able to pace shift, and cater to the individual. Thus, taking absolute advantage of this 'power' is of the utmost importance, making sure that you, as a tutor, are meeting the needs of your student. I believe my strengths are…

As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

I believe the most important things are to build confidence and foster independence. A tutor's job isn't just to help a student get a better grade on the next test; it's to give them the skills and self-belief to tackle future challenges on their own. This means creating a safe, supportive space where the student feels comfortable asking "silly"…

Inside Dandenong NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Giancarlo worked on identifying and using reflexive pronouns, then broke down the main components of narrative writing by brainstorming ideas for each stage.

Year 10 student Kylie focused on sketching cubic functions and drawing sign diagrams, followed by solving cubic inequalities in her Methods textbook.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Olivia revised indices and tackled algebra worded problems from a school pre-test, working step-by-step to translate real-life scenarios into equations to solve for x.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Maths, one student frequently made calculation errors and ran out of time in exams, as a tutor observed: "She rushed to finish and missed double-checking her answers." This led to incomplete sections and lost marks on straightforward questions.

In VCE Maths Methods, there was repeated over-reliance on reference sheets for circular functions tables, with confusion persisting when the sheet wasn't available—especially during technology-free tasks.

For Year 3 English, another student's written work showed very basic sentence structures; attempts at narrative writing lacked detail or complexity. Without guidance, progress stalled when more depth was required.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Dandenong North noticed Kylie now independently checks her own work for errors and corrects mistakes on the spot—something she previously overlooked.

Another recent win: after some initial confusion with the rational root theorem in polynomial division, Kylie worked through a few examples and could solve similar problems herself without prompting.

For a younger learner, Giancarlo has moved from needing frequent help to confidently identifying literal answers in reading comprehension questions, completing tasks almost entirely on his own.

Last week, Kylie finished her extended response questions for chapter review 1 by drawing diagrams to support her thinking.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dandenong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lyndale Greens Primary School.
