To be an effective tutor, creating a positive learning environment and building connection with the student is crucial. Tutors should be adaptable and tailor their approach to the student's learning style. Constructive feedback is necessary to help students stay motivated and progress toward their goals. Lastly, a tutor should practice patience,…

I consider being a mentor as an important quality in terms of teaching. Without being a reliable consultant, I don't believe a tutor can bring out the best from students. Being a mentor also means setting an example for them; how to manage own study habits and schedules. I will be there to support students in various way, not only for academic…

There a many key things that I believe a tutor can do to create a positive impact on their students. One of them I believe is for the tutor to be willing to share their knowledge in any area that the student is struggling with or wants some guidance in. I believe this is crucial as it is one of the main advantages of having a tutor in that they…

Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is ensuring that the student knows the content that has been taught. Also make sure that you are listening to the student and try to minimise their weaknesses and maximise their strengths. As a tutor, my strengths are being confident and only speaking what I know of. I will only teach…

In my perspective, I acknowledge the importance of establishing a sense of comfort between a tutor and a student. If this is established, the student will feel more comfortable asking questions and tend to open up more about themselves; whether it be about the marks they are getting that need improvement or whether they're having a rough time…

Patience and a willingness to provide the support a student needs is incredibly important. The tutor should be a mentor to their student, finding fulfillment and happiness in their student's success, while ensuring their goals and expectations are adhered to. The most important thing a tutor can do is approach teaching in a holistic way so a student can develop necessary skills - like interpersonal skills, to strive not only during high school, but once they graduate. A tutor should be helping their student to excel in their studies in a way that is supplementary to what is taught in school. Lastly, a…

I think the most important thing a tutor should do is understand the learning pattern and style of the student. Every student learns differently, simply using one method is not enough. As I try to see, I try to understand how different students learn and understand different content. Through the process, i try to find what is the most optimal way…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to support them, encourage them and listen to them. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to impose upon them the enjoyment of the process of learning. I think patience is undeniably one of the most important trait a tutor can have. Apart from patience, adaptability to each student's learning requirement and having a solid foundation on the topic is equally important. A tutor should be selfless and try as much as possible to help the student in their understanding. It is also important to look…

Inside Dandenong NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Giancarlo worked on identifying and using reflexive pronouns, then broke down the main components of narrative writing by brainstorming ideas for each stage.

Year 10 student Kylie focused on sketching cubic functions and drawing sign diagrams, followed by solving cubic inequalities in her Methods textbook.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Olivia revised indices and tackled algebra worded problems from a school pre-test, working step-by-step to translate real-life scenarios into equations to solve for x.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Maths, one student frequently made calculation errors and ran out of time in exams, as a tutor observed: "She rushed to finish and missed double-checking her answers." This led to incomplete sections and lost marks on straightforward questions.

In VCE Maths Methods, there was repeated over-reliance on reference sheets for circular functions tables, with confusion persisting when the sheet wasn't available—especially during technology-free tasks.

For Year 3 English, another student's written work showed very basic sentence structures; attempts at narrative writing lacked detail or complexity. Without guidance, progress stalled when more depth was required.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Dandenong North noticed Kylie now independently checks her own work for errors and corrects mistakes on the spot—something she previously overlooked.

Another recent win: after some initial confusion with the rational root theorem in polynomial division, Kylie worked through a few examples and could solve similar problems herself without prompting.

For a younger learner, Giancarlo has moved from needing frequent help to confidently identifying literal answers in reading comprehension questions, completing tasks almost entirely on his own.

Last week, Kylie finished her extended response questions for chapter review 1 by drawing diagrams to support her thinking.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dandenong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lyndale Greens Primary School.
