Tutors are just not there to help students with their students. Their most important role is to be friends and be able to guide their students in the right direction. If tutors become friends, the students listen and trust them more. Of course this does not mean that students can take tutors for a ride. As a tutor I am hardworking, diligent and…

According to me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand his/her situation and academic difficulties. It's important to relate to the student and their problem in order to be able to solve it. Another very important thing is trust. There has to be mutual trust for a knowledge transfer to happen. I believe that every…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. From my previous experience, one of the most important things I have learned about students is that some of them are just afraid of asking questions because they think that their questions are stupid or their questions do not matter. If the tutor cannot be patient with the…

A tutor can help students to develop their skills so they can think out of the box. The tutor helps students to build their foundations. Most important, the tutor helps students to become a good human being. I am always open to new thoughts. I never discourage students from asking relevant questions. I always try to link theoretical concepts with…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clear explanations, foster critical thinking, and create a supportive learning environment. A tutor is more than a teacher. A teachers job is to give a student a base level of understanding whereas a tutor can build on that and go further. This allows students to revisit sections that the teacher brushed over or to build on sections they seemingly understand to ensure they can answer a greater range of question types. Along with the…

First of all, which a tutor can do is to be a friend who motivates them, make them learn, make them understand without any pressure and excel them in their early stage of career. Secondly, it's all about how comfortable the students are with tutor to ask them doubts without any hesitation. Thirdly, make them learn how to do a smart work instead…

Being patient. A lot of teachers get frustrated when students do not understand concepts the way they teach them. It is important to teach every student in their own way and be patient with the teaching process. Otherwise a student's confidence and motivation to learn is harmed. A tutor needs to inspire the students in such a way that they know what their efforts will make them accomplish. A very few teachers are able to provide the contextual applications of what they teach the students. I believe it is paramount that a student know about WHY he is being taught something. Sparking interest in studies is not easy at times…

Ease their anxiety. Time spent on understanding. (Process is more important than the result) Giving them the tools to fish than rather the fish itself. Ally's tutoring is going well and Gopi is very nice. Ally's report was very positive and that makes me happy. I have spoken to Gopi about Ally's progress and informed her that we would like to extend Alexandra in Maths.
Angie, Denistone West

Inside Denistone WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student John focused on mastering addition, multiplication, and division of fractions, along with practice simplifying fractions using short quizzes and step-by-step examples.

In Year 11, Amber worked through financial mathematics topics including loans and annuities, tackling loan repayment tables and real-world calculation exercises from Chapter 4.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Hannah concentrated on advanced trigonometry questions—specifically trig graphing and equations—then reviewed log laws by analysing exam-style problems she found challenging in her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student repeatedly tried to solve fraction problems mentally rather than writing out steps; as a tutor noted, "when taken through the steps he is able to complete them, however struggled when he attempted to do the question in his head." This led to confusion and errors.

In Year 12 economics, another student's notes showed limited use of subject-specific terminology—terms like 'balance of payments' were not consistently recorded or reviewed, which slowed their progress on more complex questions.

For a Year 11 physics lesson, missing foundational definitions (such as volts and resistance) meant exam-style circuit problems took longer than expected.

Recent Achievements

A Year 11 student in Denistone West, who was initially unsure about integrating logarithms, became much more confident applying the reverse chain rule after some practice. She even started tackling tougher questions on her own.

Another high school student showed real progress in economics; after previously mixing up interest rates and monetary policy, he could now explain how changes by the RBA affect investment and exchange rates without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who used to rush through maths problems is now carefully showing all his working out rather than just aiming for the answer.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ermington Public School.
