Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is ensuring that the student knows the content that has been taught. Also make sure that you are listening to the student and try to minimise their weaknesses and maximise their strengths. As a tutor, my strengths are being confident and only speaking what I know of. I will only teach…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young adults.…

I believe one of the most vital things that tutors can do is alter their teaching type based on different students' abilities and progression over time. I think this helps differentiate tutoring from normal schooling as normal schooling is generalised for all students and doesn't cater for individual students' strengths and weaknesses. I believe…

Communication skills is a vital skill that I have gained through my experience volunteering at a kindergarten and primary school and I would be able to apply this when communicating with the students. Along with communication, I've also taken on the skill of active listening which would be important for when I need to hear a student's or parents'…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is work themself out of a job. All jokes aside, my number one goal in tutoring is to set up my students with amazing study habits and disciplined work ethic so that once they finish exams and go off to their next stage of life, they can carry all the skills they picked up and succeed in…

make sure the tutors are patient and goes on a pace that is comfortable for the student. the most important thing to consider as a tutor is that each student is different and has their own way of learning, and its our job to understand and match their skillset, not the other way around. Being there for a student is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Whilst tutors are there to help guide a student's learning progress, they should also present themselves as a supportive friend. The relationship between a student and tutor is important and aspects like giving general advice, and helping students during…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen, and to be a pillar of support they can lean on not only in their academics, but also in their personal lives. I strongly feel as if education is the most important tool for any person, especially in today's world. Therefore to be able to pass on that knowledge is phenomenal. I believe that if one child is educated enough, to have a comfortable life, then the following generation is also automatically able to have a comfortable and sustainable life. A…

I believe that there is no easy way in tutoring, the same as there is no easy way to get the answer. Whenever they are stuck it is our job to guide them through and companying them along. Whenever there are difficult times, give out the answers is never the way to solve the problem. I'm very patient when teaching my students, I wouldn't mind…

Adele, Donvale

Inside DonvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zac focused on building confidence with reading the time and practising times tables alongside single-digit addition.

For Year 9, Carla tackled challenging coordinate geometry questions from her holiday homework and solved literal equations to prepare for class.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben worked through exam-style questions on solving exponential, quadratic, and linear equations, as well as using the discriminant to determine solution numbers and reviewing differentiation basics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Biology, a student avoided creating personal notes on cellular respiration and the light-dependent reactions, relying instead on memorisation without deeper processing—Brielle needs to go back and memorise some steps…and create her own notes.

In Year 10 Maths, another student hesitated to continue working through algebraic rearrangement if unsure, stopping mid-problem rather than persisting: She would be going in the right direction but stop because she does not know what the next step is.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner repeatedly forgot times tables practice homework. These habits led to incomplete revision, loss of momentum, or gaps that reappeared in later tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Donvale tutor noticed a big shift in Phoebe (Year 10), who previously hesitated with index laws—now she tackles complex algebraic expressions using these rules and recently completed a mini informal test on her own, applying old knowledge to new problems.

Carla (Year 11) used to get stuck on simultaneous equations, but after mastering the substitution method, she now moves through related questions independently without needing prompts.

In primary sessions, Scarlett has gone from mixing up place values to confidently identifying numbers and counting money correctly; last week she added up $5 and $10 notes without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Pines Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Pines School.
