I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

I believe a tutor can prepare interactive lectures, so that students can participate in the lectures. That technique is very helpful to get the maximum attention of the students. Moreover, a tutor can provide real life example of the topics so that students can easily relate the study contents with the real world. I can easily get synchronized…

I am of the opinion that the most important things for tutors to do is to be patient and make the student feel comfortable. It is perfectly normal not to understand or struggle with ideas that are taught in class immediately and students should feel as though they aren't getting judged because of it. Tutors are their to help and improve their…

I wouldn't assure my future students that they will score high grades with me as their tutor. But I'm sure they will enjoy studying the subject that I teach a bit more than your present liking. Enjoying a subject will automatically show good progress, thus giving you better grades. Hence, bringing a sense of interest for the students with the…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for the students is to inspire them to have fun in learning. They should be encouraged that learning is an enjoyable activity and not a burden. I think that understanding why a student is struggling is the most important thing a tutor can do. A student may be struggling with the subject itself or may be struggling with a specific concept. Additionally there may be external factors creating conflicts for the student. Being able to listen and relate has helped me become a great teacher in…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them believe in their own ability to learn. When a student gains confidence, they become more willing to try, make mistakes, and keep going — and that’s when real progress happens. A tutor’s job isn’t just to explain concepts, but to create a safe space where the student…

I consider patience to be the most important virtue in a tutor, setting small checkpoints between certain topics is a good strategy. A tutor should always pause and ask if the student has any questions or doubts about the concept. A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

Inside DrummoyneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jess focused on revising for NAPLAN and tackling end-of-year exam questions, building confidence with key assessment formats.

For Year 8, Jess worked through algebra topics including factorisation—particularly rules involving negatives—and also practised finding areas of circles using formulas distinguishing radius from diameter.

Meanwhile, Year 9 lessons included mastering linear relationships by graphing lines with two intercepts and rearranging equations, as well as extending understanding of trigonometry to include sine, cosine, tangent and their inverse functions through textbook examples.

Recent Challenges

Several process challenges were noted across year levels.

In Year 8 maths, Jess left 7 sheets of homework, which meant she missed out on valuable feedback and practice with ratios.

A Year 9 student repeatedly relied on mental calculation for simpler algebra steps but didn't show working—"even if it is a more simple operation that can be performed in her head"—making it hard to trace sign errors when answers were off.

For a Year 10 topic test, one student forgot to check subtraction signs during simplification, leading to repeated mistakes and extra correction time instead of learning new concepts.

Recent Achievements

A Drummoyne tutor noticed one high school student, Jess, has begun to self-correct minor errors in her algebra and now regularly checks her multi-step working—where she previously skipped over mistakes.

Another older student who struggled with statistics earlier in the term showed clear progress, as seen by recent test results that reflected a solid grasp of key concepts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student experienced a breakthrough with times tables after weeks of practice and even explained the "EF procedure" back to the tutor for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balmain Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mark's Catholic Primary School.
