I think being patient with someone and allowing them to grow in their own way and learn and figure things out is something very important for a tutor to understand. I will challenge students to do questions out of their comfort zone as I believe that is the best way to grow, but only after I know that they understand the basics have a strong…

The most important thing for a tutor is to provide a fun learning environment for the student and empower them to learn. A tutor should be able to motivate the students to organise, formulate study goals and most importantly self learn and self improve. I am a very results-oriented person and one of my key strengths as a tutor is being able to…

I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. Its okay to make mistakes but if your student is afraid of you , they would never ask questions and will be afraid to make mistakes so the tutor will never be able to…

A tutor can be a guiding light for students. Each student has their own way of absorbing the information that they are taught. This might not always be available to students in a large classroom setting. A good tutor recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of the students and guides them accordingly. I spent most of my adult life abroad as a…

To me, the most important thing a tutor can do is to foster a supportive and positive learning environment. The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. A tutor should make a personalized learning experience for every student and build a relationship of trust with the student.…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond simply reviewing homework. A tutor must make sure the student truly understands the 'why' behind the concepts, especially in subjects like Math, Chemistry, and Biology. Rote memorization is temporary; genuine understanding, which comes from breaking down complex ideas, is permanent.…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. Ultimately, a successful tutor is the one who can help students out of their bottlenecks, assists them in studying, and finally equips them with the skills and mindsets for…

Responsibility is the first word that comes to my mind. I come from Vietnam, and I have seen very few Australian students who require a tutor, comparing to Vietnamese students. If they hire a tutor, they must have a need to improve their academic performance. Hence, a tutor needs to be responsible for them to achieve a better result. I cannot…

The most important is to be there and present when students are struggling. To be observe the weaknesses of each students and provide ways of improvement. Besides helping them understand and learn a topic, the tutor should also help the student master the topic through mastery learning. Mastery learning is a way of designing units of work so that each set of tasks focuses on a particular learning objective and students must master a task to move onto the next one. The tutor should also help the…

Inside Dudley ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lily focused on solving algebraic equations and revising fraction rules, including converting fractions into decimals using long division.

In Year 9, Jacob practised expanding brackets and worked through difference of two squares problems with step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sienna tackled factorisation and quadratic trinomials, applying these skills to financial problem scenarios to build confidence ahead of her assessment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 maths, a student often relied on her notes during exercises but didn't revisit them later, which meant she kept making the same sign mistakes in algebra despite reminders—she made the same mistake regarding 'sign changing' very often even with notes available.

For a Year 10 test, another student didn't let the tutor know ahead of time, missing out on tailored preparation and feeling less confident in worded problems.

In primary years, one student forgot to do her homework entirely for a shapes task, leading to confusion when new formulas appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Dudley Park tutor recently noticed a big shift in Athena, a high school student who used to need reminders but now actively takes notes and solves algebraic problems on her own—she even scored 87% on her latest test.

Another high schooler, Constanza, previously hesitated to ask questions but has started posting thoughtful queries during sessions and now finishes homework independently by applying strategies from previous lessons.

In Year 4, Alyse was initially unsure with new maths topics, but after just one session she applied the taught formula correctly and solved all the given worded problems without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prospect Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rosary School.
