To be able to identify the students strengths and weaknesses before coming up with a teaching method that is suitable to their most preferred way of learning and the way of learning that they would be able to benefit most from. Additionally, making sure the student is comfortable enough to share what they do not understand or to feedback on what…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are: 1) provide clarity, 2) build confidence, and 3) foster independent thinking. A good tutor doesn't just help students get the right answers, they help students understand the process and develop the skills to tackle future challenges on their own. Encouraging students to ask questions, think…

A good tutor can change the student's mindset and make them better people. Having a good tutor makes the subject automatically interesting and students tend to invest more time and put more effort into it. I am a very patient and dedicated person. Also, I like to make sure that every person/student I teach, understands everything thoroughly. I try…

Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. However, it is important for the tutor to recognize this and invite the student into the circle of discussion and let them contribute. It is crucial to create a safe space that is…

I think patience is the biggest key factor as without that there can be no way a tutor could help a student. Learning new things can be tricky and scary which is why a tutor must be able to understand a student's learning pace, be able to communicate thoroughly and also make the learning experience a fun one I am a very patient person which I…

Being patient with a student has to be the most important. Learning isn’t the same for everyone and some areas of learning are harder for some people. Remaining patient and staying kind while a child is learning is extremely important. I am a patient person, who can think creatively and how to teach subjects in different ways to suit different…

A tutor is beyond someone that can just teach some topics to students, but they are someone that the student looks upto, and feels comfortable sharing their weaknesses to. It is essential for for the tutor to understand the child’s needs, and cater to those specifically. My strengths are that i have recently graduated high school, so I am very…

I consider a tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor to learn…

Support my students and give them the skills to excel in their education while also fulfilling their goals. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. Listening to them and understanding their point of view when something seems difficult for them, even when it isn't really from my perspective. Then combatting this problem by exploring different ways to present a difficult concept. I do this using analogies and using simple…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to celebrate even the smallest of wins. No matter how slow or hard progress is, it is still progress! I think tutor should do everything for his or her students because after the parents only teacher is one person who can very closed for the student. Being a tutor requires a great responsibility. The first and foremost thing a tutor can do is to be a friend with the student and develop a rapport. We have to understand them first then only we can approach accordingly through our teaching. It's like being a therapist and getting to know them better. If we succeed then we can easily transfer and…

Always tell them not to be scared to ask. I often realize students are uncomfortbale to ask when they need help. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach a student how to pursue their own studies, that is, if I can teach a student how to study without the need for a tutor, that's worth more than tutoring them the whole year and it will serve them well for the rest of their life. An excellent tutor will keep their students motivated and…

Joy is fantastic. Though we only started with Joy in the last term, her work with Mina has made a significant difference to her over all marks. She makes effective use of the time when tutoring, Her explanations are clear, and she checks back to make sure the information is understood. This has really helped Mina's understanding of her maths work. We look forward to the "Joy" effect on next years work.

Inside East PerthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Emily worked through her recent school assignment on area, perimeter, and fractions, carefully reviewing each solution for accuracy.

In Year 8, Samuel focused on highest common factor (HCF), lowest common multiple (LCM), and decimal numbers by revisiting his test questions and tackling a custom worksheet for extra practice.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Mark started the basics of trigonometry with SOHCAHTOA for right-angled triangles, applying these rules to solve introductory problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student hesitated to attempt new algebra problems, saying "I just can't do this," and would stop before trying alternative approaches.

In a Year 6 maths lesson, another student guessed answers by spotting patterns instead of writing out working, leading to repeated errors in division tasks.

One Year 11 student spent excessive time re-reading test questions—"he wastes the majority of his time reading the question over and over again"—which left less time for actual problem-solving.

Across both primary and senior levels, students' confidence often dropped sharply after setbacks, causing them to lose focus or avoid asking for help when confused.

Recent Achievements

One East Perth tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, who used to hesitate before tests, recently scored 27 out of 30 and now actively asks for new challenges rather than waiting for guidance.

A Year 8 student previously reluctant to admit when stuck has begun voicing specific questions in sessions, allowing her to clarify tricky algebra steps right away instead of guessing.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who would rush through multiplication tables is now pausing to check her work and showing real excitement when she spots patterns—she finished her last worksheet with zero errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Perth Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College WA (East Perth).
