I think passion is the most important quality. With passion, it comes along with motivation. One with passion can often get the job done better than others without it. I believe my strengths are patience and passion. I love to help others improve and thrive, hence usually I would put more effort into teaching others. I can speak English,…

I think a tutor is a map for the pathway of the student's success. The tutor will do all within their limit to make sure they have given enough importance to the student to excel. This includes the peripheral knowledge that a student should have surrounding the content/topic - which means what is the purpose of learning/ how is it going to help…

I think it's really important that students are given confidence in their abilities and a sense of pride in their learning. Students are capable of learning anything, it's the role of the tutor to show them that they are! In terms of mathematics I think it's very important that tutors give students a wealth of techniques which they can employ…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn in a way that maximises their potential. Everyone learns in a different way and I believe a tutor can find what is best for the individual. A tutor needs to be able to teach a student to be able to independently work through challenges. Whilst someone who has…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make sure they actually learn. It may seem obvious, but the reason personal tutoring is so much more effective than learning in a classroom is because a tutor you can guide an individual through the learning process each step of the way. All students would benefit from having someone go through topics with them one on one to help them understand things better. It's something that teachers are often unable to do frequently in the classroom and is a big benefit that tutors can offer. Especially for kids that feel as though they aren't capable to learn a subject, going through…

I think that as a tutor, it is important to not take the "one fits all" approach for lessons. Rather, it is important for tutors to be flexible, as the way in which students learn best varies widely. A good tutor can pick up on the learning style of their students, and subsequently adapt their lessons to ensure maximum growth and improvement. As a…

A tutor can be more than a person that just helps with a particular subject. They should be willing to change their way of thinking for each student that they teach and know that patience is the key to help students reach their ultimate goal. They should act as a role model and be able to give feedback on how to cope with the pressures of school…

The student will get little from the sessions if they don’t find what is being taught to them as fun or exciting. Thats why as a tutor, you need to make them look forward to seeing you next, and ensure you always have a positive attitude towards their learning journey. Having compassion. Being proficient in a subject does not guarantee that the student will understand as deeply as the tutor. Sometimes, techniques won't work, or the student may have problems outside of academics. Being compassionate will outweigh any other things that a tutor can do at the end of the day. I am able to compartmentalize well, and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them realise the small learning mistakes commonly made that in my opinion are not useful further in life. Namely, learning my heart or just memorising to blurt out a concept without understanding its core only to score good grades. A Tutor should be able to make the student understand…

Inside ElsternwickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Liliane worked on addition and subtraction in money scenarios, along with telling time on an analog clock.

In Year 10, Celia reviewed trigonometry concepts including sin/cos/tan and Pythagoras' theorem using worked examples, then practiced rearranging algebraic equations.

Year 11 student Bonnie focused on logarithmic equations and explored chemistry content involving valence electron shells, breaking down problems step by step.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student approached rearranging algebraic equations by jumping straight to answers without breaking down steps—"needs to break down the order to solve the problems," a tutor noted—which led to confusion with signs and structure.

Meanwhile, in Year 11 English, another avoided planning essay paragraphs, which made sentence flow inconsistent and transitions awkward during practice essays.

For a Year 2 learner, attention wandered often in multi-step maths tasks, causing key instructions on place value and addition facts to be missed.

In each case, gaps in process or focus left errors unnoticed until review or feedback arrived.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elsternwick noticed a big shift with Lara (Year 11), who now arrives each week with her own questions, having realised she gets more out of sessions when she pinpoints where she's stuck—something she never did before.

In Year 10 maths, Celia made real strides by not just memorising laws but confidently explaining how to expand and factorise equations on her own, even after struggling with perfect squares last term.

Meanwhile, Nushara (Year 4) finished all her homework on telling the time correctly and read aloud with clear expression during the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Adass Israel School - Orrong Road Campus.
