I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is truly be their well-wisher. I think students are coming to tutors because they know they need help. Acknowledging that they took that step, understanding the knowledge base with which they're there, teaching them in easy terms, and creating a long term plan for their studies is the…

Especially for younger students, I believe that it is important to not only teach the subject, but to lead by example to influence the children to adopt good values such as kindness, patience and tenacity. I can be strict or friendly depending on the needs of the student, so each student's experience will be different in order for them to realise…

Firstly, improve the students grasp and understanding of the content, providing them with not just the ability to answer questions, but to understand logically why something is such. Secondly, help develop an appreciation for the area of study by delivering the tutoring in a positive and engaging matter so that the student enjoys learning it.…

I think understanding the student's capacity, strengths, and weaknesses plays a vital role in being a tutor, therefore, the tutor could implement a personalized system for each student. I am an organized and systematic person. I can take notes and make summary of a topic neatly. In addition, I like to simplify a concept to make my students…

I feel that the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to act as a source of information throughout their time of studying. School can be, and often is, stressful, even if you love the subjects being taught and the teachers teaching them. Therefore, I think the role of a tutor hinges largely on offering support and passing on…

I believe that a tutor should plan individually for each student to cater for their needs. Each student has their own strengths and weaknesses, and it should be the tutor's role to discover these and change their teaching approaches accordingly. A good tutor should be able to encourage the students to overcome setbacks and achieve their best…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is create a space where the student feels completely comfortable being themselves. They should be able to openly say what they do and don’t understand without fear of judgment. This honesty is what allows us to help them in the best way possible. Beyond that, a tutor should always aim to build…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. My flexible teaching style means the student quickly feels comfortable and isn't afraid to ask…

I personally think that tutoring is a noble job as tutors play a role in shaping the character of students and help the students to find their strengths. The tutor and student can also build a healthy relationship and connect with each other which may help the student build a positive perspective towards studying. The most important part of…

Firstly, a tutor has to be able to understand the student's needs and then personalise a learning plan/ style that works for the student - one size does not fit all! Secondly, the tutor needs to guide the student not get them to parrot generic question answers. It's about building the students confidence up, through positive encouragement, and…

For me, the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be there and help the student when he/she has some difficulties with his/her studies. Trying to find the best way to explain the topic or lesson and make it understandable. Also, establishing contact with the student is extremely important to make him/her feels comfortable and…

The most important thing apart from helping the student understand that they can solve things on their own, is teaching the student how to study the subject. This way, the student will gradually understand how learning the subject works. I have a lot of patience and I am very good at using logistics. I can explain the same thing in many different…

The most important thing would be to push them to be passionate and to be interested in what they are doing, and to help them want to improve at what they're learning. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. Again asking the student questions about the topic can help…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to learn alongside them. This inspires and encourages a student to be themselves and ask questions openly. Be honest. This helps to establish rapport and trust, the two most critical elements to a successful tutoring relationship. Be flexible. Learn not to show annoyance…

The student will get little from the sessions if they don’t find what is being taught to them as fun or exciting. Local Reviews

Liz, Elwood

Inside ElwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Frankie practised solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, as well as reviewing strategies for tackling measurement and geometry revision questions.

In Year 10, Isla focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions, alongside strengthening her understanding of negative numbers through step-by-step practice.

For Year 12, Alice completed a detailed review of matrix division and the identity matrix before moving on to advanced applications with transition matrices in preparation for upcoming assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A significant amount of knowledge...was lost over the last week due to incompletion of homework for a Year 11 student who missed assignments on credit card and interest problems, resulting in noticeable gaps during a weekly quiz.

In VCE English, another student arrived with only half their assigned essay finished, citing busy SAC periods but not communicating in advance.

For a Year 12 mathematics lesson, skipping careful reading meant important details in compound interest questions were overlooked, requiring repeated correction.

Meanwhile, one junior secondary student relied heavily on step-by-step memorisation for algebra instead of developing conceptual understanding, which slowed progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Elwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with matrix operations—she's now creating her own process for multiplication and tackling advanced transition matrices almost independently.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student who struggled with algebra is expanding brackets more accurately and now works through negative numbers with less prompting than before.

In English, Will (Year 12) has started asking for new vocabulary during sessions and independently picks out errors in his writing—a big step up from earlier weeks when he'd avoid revising drafts.

Last session, he submitted his homework on time and complete.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Columba's School.
