The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to trust his student and teach him lessons as engaging as possible. Trusting student is very important as the student will gain more motivation when he or she is trusted. The lessons should be also engaging for the student to learn things pragmatically and also be motivated to learn more.…

Being a good mentor and setback to the students on how to be in a society. Educating in the right way, making a person a very good being, developing the children's skill is what I think is the most important thing as a tutor. Very good communication where anyone can rely on, interactive person, energetic, enthusiastic person, disciplined, watchful…

To inspire a student to be curious and develop a love of learning, as people are not often motivated to improve in areas in which they lack passion. The last family I had tutored had told me that after my sessions with their son, he had stopped crying every time he had to complete his school homework. From this experience, I have come to…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are: Build Confidence – Creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes is crucial. Encouragement helps them believe in their abilities, which is often half the battle. Clarify and Simplify Concepts – Tutors…

As each student is unique it is important to assess their level of learning, identify the areas where they are lacking and then provide suitable tutoring. While teaching a tutor must implement a teaching plan which suits the student. A tutor must not only look into academics but also the general wellbeing of the student. My excellent communication…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, make learning less stressful, and explain things in a way that actually makes sense to them. It’s also important to be patient, encouraging, and flexible, every student learns differently, so a tutor should be able to adapt to their needs and help them feel…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is identify each student's individuality and therefore handle them uniquely, with utmost care and understanding. It is also extremely important for the tutor to be aware of verbal or behavioral feedback received from the student, and therefore be able to modify their teaching…

The most important thing is allowing students to become independent. The tutor should show them how to solve problems so that they can do them themselves and not just solve problems for them. As someone who has personally experienced anxiety due to academic pressure, I deeply understand how stress can block learning. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

I think I huge part of it is often confidence. I have found most students already understand and are able to do the work however they don’t have the confidence to back themselves. I have a positive attitude even when the student is wrong, I correct them by not saying that they were wrong but by picking up the same topic and explaining it in the correct manner. The most important things a tutor can do for students is to teach as well as keep them motivated on their progress. Liz, Elwood

Inside ElwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Frankie practised solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, as well as reviewing strategies for tackling measurement and geometry revision questions.

In Year 10, Isla focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions, alongside strengthening her understanding of negative numbers through step-by-step practice.

For Year 12, Alice completed a detailed review of matrix division and the identity matrix before moving on to advanced applications with transition matrices in preparation for upcoming assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A significant amount of knowledge...was lost over the last week due to incompletion of homework for a Year 11 student who missed assignments on credit card and interest problems, resulting in noticeable gaps during a weekly quiz.

In VCE English, another student arrived with only half their assigned essay finished, citing busy SAC periods but not communicating in advance.

For a Year 12 mathematics lesson, skipping careful reading meant important details in compound interest questions were overlooked, requiring repeated correction.

Meanwhile, one junior secondary student relied heavily on step-by-step memorisation for algebra instead of developing conceptual understanding, which slowed progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Elwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with matrix operations—she's now creating her own process for multiplication and tackling advanced transition matrices almost independently.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student who struggled with algebra is expanding brackets more accurately and now works through negative numbers with less prompting than before.

In English, Will (Year 12) has started asking for new vocabulary during sessions and independently picks out errors in his writing—a big step up from earlier weeks when he'd avoid revising drafts.

Last session, he submitted his homework on time and complete.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Columba's School.
