Aside from the knowledge that you will share, it is patience, understanding the intellectual capacity of the student as well as their behavior are the things to consider to be a tutor. I believe that it is important for a tutor to be someone that can be there for a student when they need help emotionally, as well as academically. For many, being there for someone emotionally can be as simple as not knowing about their personal lives and just being there purely to help, while some students, I have found, need to talk about…

The tutor needs to make sure that all the questions of the student are answered really well. Most importantly, the tutor needs to be a role model for the student. Someone that he/she can look up to and be proud of. I have the ability to be extremely patient with my students which helps me gain their trust. Moreover, I can also induce self…

I believe that it is important to help students to understand how academic skills can lead them to their goals, and to encourage them to work hard, doing their best to make the most of opportunities that come to them. It is also important for a tutor to be able to guide a student through failure, and help them to deal with it, if it arises, while…

I believe that to be considered a good tutor, one must communicate with their student in order to get the most out of a lesson. The student should walk away after each lesson feeling fulfilled and have a better understanding of content. I believe that I am strong at listening to the student's needs and adapting to fit a system that can benefit…

Help them to do the best they can, and to enjoy doing it. I believe that they go together, that "learning" which is not enjoyed is often, in the long run, not real learning at all, just hoop jumping. Respect for the situations of my students, flexibility in responding to the sometimes substantial differences among them, humour as a means of…

To provide support in a one on one fashion is extremely valuable. Having extra tools and strategies to tackle questions can only increase ones confidence, which is to say, a tutor can provide what is not always provided in the classroom. It is ultimately this process of developing more confidence and independence in learning that is crucial to…

Although it is important to improve students' results, I believe the most important responsibilities of a tutor are to help their students to discover their talents, enable them to reach their full potential, and empower them to be independent thinkers and passionate life-long learners. By this, I mean being truly available for your students at all times of the day, working through their frustrations and areas of weakness with a growth mindset and patient attitude, and knowing how to bounce back and encourage them if they miss the mark academically. Being such a recent student…

As I have mentioned above, every student's different capabilities and strategies to learn in their own way need to be considered before even beginning to tutor them. If a tutor teaches without having this in mind, there are chances that even after months of teaching, the student will not grasp the information as well as he/she probably could if…

The most important thing a tutor can do is find the most efficient way to deliver concepts to their students. This will always change for each student, and so a good tutor has to be flexible and receptive to what works and what doesn't. The end goal really is to get them educated, and if that means fostering a strong friendly connection or simply…

The Tutor should have a lot of patience while teaching children, as each child is different from one other. I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. The role of the tutor is to recognise what the student is capable of doing on their own…

I believe that a good tutor has the the ability to help students build confidence for the classroom, and inspire them to be the best that they can be. After the first session I gave Matt some feedback about Mia (via Text). Matt was open to my feedback about Mia’s learning style, and I feel he listened and implemented during the second session. Mia walked away feeling more confident/ comfortable after the second session.

Inside FawknerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Harry concentrated on algebra skills, working through expressions and equations to build confidence.

For Year 10, recent sessions addressed data distributions by finding the five number summary (including IQR, median, Q1, and Q3), constructing box plots, and applying the 68–95–99.7% rule for normal distributions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student practised multiplication using area models and explored equivalent fractions through hands-on activities.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 General Maths, one student struggled to locate formulas in a disorganised bound reference book, leading to wasted time during practice SACs—"he spent several minutes flipping pages for the right formula."

In a Year 10 statistics lesson, another student relied heavily on calculators and spreadsheets rather than practicing manual quartile calculations, risking gaps in understanding under exam conditions.

A primary student frequently left homework incomplete and needed prompting to edit written work; when asked to revise spelling errors, "he understood what was wrong but didn't correct it without help," resulting in repeated mistakes on similar tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Fawkner tutor recently noticed Charlize, a Year 12 student, move from confusion to confidently identifying outliers and calculating interquartile ranges using box plots—something she struggled with at the start.

In Year 8 maths, Emmanuel now works through new concepts after just one example and has begun tackling similar questions independently instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Alex in primary school is showing real initiative: he self-corrects punctuation errors during writing tasks and is starting to choose more complex sentence structures on his own. Last session, he finished his letter draft without needing reminders about capital letters or full stops.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fawkner Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Matthew's School.
